I have gone through various stages when it comes to Bob Knight. At first I thought he was a crazy lunatic but then over time I came to respect the man and what he stands for. As I watched his speech on Thursday and his comments about John Calipari I could not help but think of a bitter old man. He is obviously still very bitter about what happened at Indiana but I sensed some jealousy. Coach Knight stands second to none in college basketball circles but I think he has some regrets about how his coaching career finished up (assuming he is done coaching which I think he is). I do not think he is jealous of Coach Calipari but rather he feels that he adhered strictly to all NCAA rules yet he was forced out and he sees Coach Calipari, whose past programs have come under serious scrutiny, yet he is now coaching at one of the most prestigious programs in all of college basketball. It is understandable why he may host some sort of resentment and Coach Calipari happens to be the one it was taken out on during that speech in Indianapolis.
It should be noted that in responding to Knight's comments Calipari was very classy. He simply talked about the respect he had and will continue to have for Knight despite his comments this past Thursday. I thought that it showed a lot of self-control on Calipari's part because if he is truly without fault in past allegations, which so far he has been found without fault, it must have been somewhat difficult not to lash out at the General's comments.
