Coaching Field Hockey: How to Run the Doubles Passing Drill

John Smith
Field hockey can be a tricky sport to understand and learn. However, if you want you players to improve, it is essential that you teach them the proper passing techniques. One drill that can be extremely effective in helping players learn how to pass in field hockey is the doubles passing drill. The main goal of this drill is to help players get a feel for the ball and to learn how to effectively communicate and work as a team.

Coaches should set up a line of cones leaving enough space so that players can pass the ball between them. The coach should then instruct the players to line up in two separate, parallel lines. The drill involves two players at a time, so proper communication between them is essential to helping them learn to pass the ball correctly.

The coach should then explain the proper technique of passing the ball to one another. After that, he or she should instruct the players that they are to move up the field, passing the ball to one another through every opening in the cones. While the drill sounds easy, it is easy for one of the players to make a mistake and mess up the drill. The drill should start slow, allowing the players to have ample time in order to perfect their passing technique. However, as the doubles passing drill progresses, the pace should be picked up. Hopefully, at the end, the players will be able to pass the ball successfully to one another without making and mistakes at a very fast pace.

There are variations to this drill that coaches can use in order to make his or her team better field hockey players. One variations includes having the players weave between the cones while still being able to pass the ball through the cones. This can take a bit of practice, so you should not expect your team to be great at it right away. However, it can be very useful in training and should help the team in the long run. Remember, have fun and succeeding will mean even more to the team.
