The Coastal Humane Society is located at 30 Range Road in Brunswick, Maine. As you approach the shelter, you feel like you are driving to a pet paradise. The shelter is only about a half mile from the center of the busy town, yet it is tucked away in a bit of wilderness.
When you enter the shelter, you will be greeted by welcoming staff. You will also come face to face with some of the wonderful cats that are up for adoption. The cats in the front room are there for your petting pleasure. You can just visit and pet them all day long if you want.
If you want to see more cats, the staff with direct you to the cat rooms. These are two huge rooms filled with very happy and spoiled cats. You can enter and get acquainted with all the friendly felines. If you are looking to adopt, you are free to spend as much time as you need to make the right choice. The staff will also help you find the perfect cat according to your needs.
If you want to look at the dogs, the staff will take you to the kennels. There you will see many dogs all ready to be taken to their forever home. If you don't find the right dog for you, ask the staff if they have any pets in the back room that will be available soon. The shelter often has dogs that are not quite ready for adoption and they will be happy to show you those dogs if you are willing to wait a bit to take one home.
The Coastal Humane Society has reasonable rates for pet adoption. If you are a senior, you will get a special rate because the shelter understands the importance of matching seniors up with the perfect pet. You will also get a special rate if you adopt an older pet, or free if the pet is very hard to adopt.
I was lucky enough to get a free dog from this awesome shelter. They had a very old dog that needed a home for his final days. He had lots of medical issues and was not expected to live very long. I picked him up with the expectation that I would not have time to get attached. But Puff melted my heart and that very day I knew I would miss him forever when it was his time. The days turned into weeks, then months, then years. I had Puff for just over 3 years and I will indeed miss him forever.
If you can't commit to adopting a pet, you can become a foster parent for a dog at this shelter. Becoming a foster parent is easy, just tell them you want to foster and fill out an application. Then you can take home a cat or dog and socialize it until it finds a forever home. I was able to foster two puppies for a week, and I loved it.
To learn more about this beautiful pet shelter, check out their website and visit the actual shelter if you can. And if you want to help the shelter but you can't adopt, you can always donate money or supplies. You can even donate your time. They have a wish list that you can look at to see if there is anything you can offer to help the shelter and their awesome pets.

Post a CommentRIP Puff. Althuogh I don't live in Maine, I do like to read about what animal shelters are doing in various areas to see what works and what doesn't. This info can help other animal shelters. Thanks.
Very close to home, but even living out in the woods my house has too many pets now, thanks Darlene!
