When thinking of contraceptives, Coke is probably not the first thing to come to mind. In 1985, Sharee A. Umpierre of the University of Puerto Rico, Joseph A. Hill of The Fertility Centers of New England, and Deborah J. Anderson of Boston University School of Medicine and Harvard Medical School found that Coke could be used as a spermicide, causing the sperm to literally explode. However, just two years later, Chuang-Ye Hong of Taipei Medical University, C.C. Shieh, P. Wu, and B.N. Chiang of Taiwan found that neither Coke nor Pepsi affected sperm enough to be used as an effective spermicide and could not prove the claims of Umpierre's team. However, both research groups were awarded the 2008 Ig Nobel award in Chemistry this year. Both research groups had one representative attend the awards ceremony--Deborah Anderson and C.Y. Hong's daughter Wan Hong
The Ig Nobel awards celebrate real science that makes you both laugh and think. The awards are usually given shortly before the actual Nobel awards.
