Did you know who started the famous taste tests? None other then Pepsi who ran it as marketing campaign and boy did this ploy work to Pepsi's advantage. It really worked for them, as the majority of Americans choose Pepsi in these blind taste tests. Pepsi took those results and ran with the publicity it generated.
Back when I was growing up we drank coke because that is what my parents favored and well you know how parents can be. It was until the late 90's that I followed suit, but the rebel in me decided to try Pepsi and once I did I got hooked. I am a self proclaimed Pepsi-holic.
So truthfully what are the differences between the two? We all know they are cool, refreshing, and have lots of added sugar and caramel coloring. There is a price difference with coke being a bit cheaper but for some people that doesn't matter.
Pepsi has the more sugar but personally I think coke is sweeter!
History
Coca-Cola was introduced in 1886 as a patent medicine and it cured what ever ailed you. It claimed to cure an addiction to morphine, headaches and impotence as well as more. The company itself makes a concentrate which is then sold to it's bottlers who add the water and bottle it. The bottlers go ahead and the put it in the stores so we can buy it. The bottles first appeared in 1894 and the first cans were sold in 1955.
Pepsi was introduced in 1890's but was not trademarked until 1903 and it also had medicinal claims such as to cure stomach trouble. Pepsi is also a concentrate at first then the water is added when it is mass produced.
So coke is older but both are over 100 years old and are as popular today as they were back then. I don't see that changing anytime soon, simply because there are so many people around the world who have grown up with one or the other.

Crystal Pepsi and Blue Pepsi had quick and fatal runs and didn't last long at all. Pepsi X has more caffeine then regular Pepsi and is similar to the energy drinks but is not sold in the US. Who can forget Holiday spice? I sure can, I didn't like it.
Medicinal Claims
I can understand the ability of colas to cure a headache, as anyone who gets migraines knows caffeine help you get rid of it, so I guess it does have medicine purposes. As far as Pepsi's claims with easing tummy troubles, how many of us pregnant women with morning sickness have not tried the flat Pepsi trick? I know each of the three times I was pregnant I used it to ease my morning sickness. That certainly is not an old wives tale by no stretch of the imagination.
Cola used in recipes.
Who had never had a Pepsi float or a coke float? They are quite similar to a root beer float, with the exception you use your favorite cola rather the root beer. What a great summer time treat! If you have never had one you have no clue what you are missing.
I bake cakes from scratch and I use cola as I would water. Water is so plain but the cola adds zip and zest to any food product you create in the kitchen, so next time you are baking skip the water and add cola in equal parts. The last link below gives some recipes in which to use cola products.
That's my story and I am sticking to it. Have a great day everyone.
