DNA is used to solve many sexual assault and violent crime cases. I am not against the fact that they perform the DNA testing. If a person has been arrested with evidence of committing a violent crime, lets do DNA testing. But if they are never convicted, their DNA does not belong in a permanent national database. The CODIS database should be for convicted convicts, not innocent citizens. It is government invasion of our privacy, and the system has the potential for abuse. If you are found to be innocent, the federal government will not remove your DNA voluntarily. You must take a legal action, which some people do not have the resources to do.
According to the Catos Institute, the CODIS (combined DNA index system) program started in 1994. Federal funds were offered to state officials for collecting DNA and adding it to database. By 1998 all 50 states has laws requiring DNA collection. At first they were just collecting the DNA of sex offenders. After awhile, they widened that to anyone that committed a violent crime. Now it has begun to be widened even more to include petty crimes and misdemeanors. Currently, 38 states will perform mandatory DNA collection for misdemeanors. With this new bill, you don't even need to be convicted of a crime to be required to submit to DNA testing. Do we presume innocent until proven guilty? Not anymore. Once you are in CODIS you will be an automatic suspect for all future cases.
The state of Alabama has actually mandated that the DNA collections in CODIS can be used for medical research. Michigan has authorized the use of its DNA for academic and medical research. Eight states have requested the DNA they collect not be used for genetic prediction of human characteristics, predisposition to diseases or genetic disorders. 40 states have not specified if it will or not. source I think the CODIS system is getting out of control. DNA collection should only be used when law enforcement has strong evidence that someone has committed a sexual or violent crime. If they are not found guilty the DNA collection should not be stored in CODIS. In addition, CODIS should only be used as a tool in the conviction of criminals.

Post a CommentWhat they are doing is wrong, I was arrested in they took my D.N.A and the D.A. threw the case out because everyone lied to get me arrested. I've never been into trouble, but now I must fight to get it out of this system they have to control us. I agree get the D.N.A if they are found guilty and if not remove it.
This is just a plan to control you, so if you ever commit a crime they have you on file already. Just like how they did fingerprint all the little kids so when they grow up they have them on file already. Wake the heck up everyone this system soon will have infants D.N.A. to catch them if they ever do anything major.
They are taking away are rights and tell you its for safety. stop trading your freedom for safety that I fought so hard to give you.
NO, this is NOT a good idea !!! Not only does it violate Amendment V of the Constitution of the United States, it's also violation of Amendment IV of the Constitution of the United States. You folks best start reading the Constitution of the United States. Not to mention the potnetials for abuse of it as well.
To whom it may concern I was wonder would it be against the law to use blood samples for DNA profiles that people surrender to blood banks and drive to help the system with more and accurate DNA profiling. I Myself donate blood and it wouldnt be a problem in my views since I willing gave it away for R&D and saving lives but it could also save lives through The system as well. I dont know if anyone or if many people have came up with that thought but I just wanted to share my oppinion.. Thanks In Advance...........
I would say that it's a good idea to get everyone's DNA in the database (even those who haven't commited crimes doesn't mean they won't in the future) but because of the abuse of the system, I must agree with you.
