Flag Football Interrleague Match: Novaffl versus JoeFergsports
Neighborhood: Alexandria
Polo Fields, VA 22304

Good afternoon flag football fans. In an effort to be fair and unbiased, its time we take an icon from the JoeFerg Sports league -- who apparently has been part of several winning teams in and throughout JoeFerg Sports, Silver Spring football league. He participated in the showdown between the Novaffl team and the Ferg Team at the Polo Fields this last Saturday 5 JAN 07. In brilliant prose and expertise, #1, also known as "Cody" breaks it down on what happened this past, fateful Saturday.

Note, he did not know some of the players referenced so I filled in the gaps with Field comments and as promised didn't edit his prose.

He goes by the "pen-name" of #1, and without further delay let's dive into the questions:

State your name for the record or any alternate aliases you go by:

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to give my view of what happened this week. #1, Cody W., no alias's really, #1 is the number I wore during the seasons I played in JFerg.

How long have you been playing in the Ferg league?

3 Seasons

What roles and responsibilities do you have in the Ferg league?

None. Dictator Ferg, has all roles, responsibilities, etc...

Describe the teams and history in the JoeFerg league and whether you were a part of any championship teams:

My team is the Go-Getters, we won the championship the 1st season we played and this past season we lost in the first. The teams in JFerg have gotten more competitive over the seasons. Badboyz is clearly the most successful team, though the Go-Getters were the last team to beat them in JFS. They are the only team that has pretty much established themselves, as the team to beat. Then, there are about 6 teams that are competitive amongst each other. Then of course you have your teams that aren't that good, headed by your man Sanfran's 300. Habitual losers.

[Field comment: SanFran writes the wildly popular "Quite frankly" and also plays in both Ferg and Novaffl leagues. He was instrumental in organizing this past Saturday's inter-league game]

What position do you excel at and how does that match up with the best of Ferg players?

I'd prefer to play WR fulltime, but my team needs me to play DB also. Amongst the WR in the league, i rank up there with the better WRs. Top 5 for sure!!!

As far as the events that occurred on 5 Jan 07, describe some of the problems that occurred in regards to bickering. Specifically, where did most altercations occur (line, WR corps, Qb?) and who were the troublemakers?

MadCap, I think it was a disaster on so many levels. As for the JFerg team, more of the issues were internal, which didn't allow the team to play to its talent level. The NOVA squad, it wasn't really the entire squad, the trouble and bitching can be narrowed down two a few people.

#1 The bald guy. There wasn't a play that went by all day that he wasn't in one of the refs face about. It's like he assumed the NOVA people could do no wrong. Yet his impact on the field was so minimal.

[Field comment: This reference is obviously a mention to Billy Badass Lynch, see prior articles for clarification]

#2 The short stocky guy (not black, not white), who along with the bald guy, officially ruined the game in the last 28 seconds. I'll explain there actions below and to a lesser extent, the QB [Field comment: The reference here is to the "Jordanian Bull, Nick, Defensive lineman and PilotRon the Novaffl Qb. I have to be Nick's advocate for a moment, since he does not readily access the web site due to his busy lifestyle. Nick stated, that the Ferg linemen held him all day and even bear-hugged him at one point, and the moderators turned a blind eye.].

This guy (PilotRon) really didn't bitch like #1 and #2, but he put his hands on the ref (pushed him). You never put your hands on an official or another grown man for that matter. His bitching stemmed from him saying he got pushed. Now, I mind you that this guy was forced to the sidelines where when he was touched, he was 1 foot from the sideline (per NOVA rules, you can push somebody out of bounds).

He was falling, about to get sacked like 7 yards behind the line of scrimmage, etc.. Had this guy not gotten touched, nothing good would have happened on that play for the NOVA team. Which was just another of the many examples of there team coming at this one particular ref. ATHAR, i think his name was.

Mind you he (ATHAR) looked like the most harmless person on the field. In trying to justify what he thought should have been called, he PUSHED the ref. His ass should have been handled immediately, but since it wasn't --- he obviously pushed the right person.

MADCAP this pretty much was the theme of the day for the NOVA players; blame every call and non-call on ATHAR. Get in ATHAR's face, and try to force him into a call.

There were two refs, and not once did any of them get in Sanfran's face, who might add is a BUM, and didn't blow his whistle not once the entire game. In the end, #1 and #2, in my opinion ruined what could have been a good game, and ultimately, there actions confused everybody on the last play.

Finally, here is a chance to outline what you contributed the game, and a brief summary of those days' events for your fans

Nothing really. Like I said the JFerg team, had internal issues that didn't allow the team to perform to there full talent level. We had 3 WRs, myself, TO, and J, who are arguably 3 of the top 5 WR in JFS, and myself and J had 2 catches (and looks) in the game. Internal issues man, too many coaches, to many opinions, not enough action.

Were there any players on Nova who impressed you? If so, describe who they are.

2 players from the Nova team impressed me, and i'll do my best to describe them. Groverb, for a big guy he has hands and comes off as a total TEAM player. The other would be the shorter CB/WR who got the INT on our 1st drive down the field. We (read: JFS team) probably under estimated this guy. He got the big INT, in the first half and the also scored (i think) the last controversial TD at the end of the game.

[Field comment: the other guy mentioned here is probably Jason G, or Radar]

Were there any players on Nova who were utterly, as you term it "straight BUMS?"

#1 and #2 (Billy and Nick) Totally irrelevant to the success of NOVA's team, highly responsibly for the negativity surrounding the NOVA team.

Can you explain the final score of the game and why Joe Ferg thinks it's a tie?

Here is why it could be a tie or not. I'll take you through the play, since I was on the side. NOVA's QB was getting pressured, in the midst of this pressure, there was holding on the offensive line. None of the ref's made the call or saw the hold, for whatever reason. Our players on the side were yelling, "He's holding him!", at this point (he was still holding him) and ATHAR motioned as if he was making the holding call. Since no physical flag was thrown and no whistle was blown, the play continued.

After being in the pocket for about 10 secs (hence the holding), the QB threw the ball to (the 2nd guy i was impressed with-Jason or radar?) and after a few missed flags, etc. he took it in for the TD. Here in lies the problem. The NOVA players rightfully celebrated for the TD. ATHAR then goes to bum ass sanfran and tells him he calls holding.

We (read: JFS players on sideline) know that ATHAR is about to make this call, so we are saying stuff like, "It's coming back." Billy, first goes into a tangent about ATHAR making this call. Then, Nick, goes after ATHAR saying, "I know you didn't make that call, I know you didn't make that call".

This is when I get in the middle of him -- attempting to go at ATHAR. My handling of his neck (lol) probably made matters worse but, I was really just trying to get in between him from going after the 5'1" defenseless ATHAR.

Riot ensued. After players were held back and people calmed down, ATHAR and bum ass sanfran, huddle and ATHAR decides he no longer is going to make the call. After being reminded he already made the call, how can he take it back, another riot ensued where Billy goes after ATHAR, easily being held back.

Both sides decided the game is over. Did he or did he not make the call? If he did, TIE, if he didn't, NOVA 34-28. It is that simple.

How do you think you stack up against Novaffl players?

If that was the full representation of the Novaffl players, I'd probably be Top 2 Wr in the league.

Will you be present for a rematch with Novaffl, in a mini tourney, and if so what rules do you hope everyone plays by?

Yes, If mother nature lets it be above 45 degrees. The rules don't matter, to me as long as everybody agrees to them and the refs/mods call them as they see it.

What do you think of Novaffl rules compared to JoeFerg rules? Specifically, justify why in a 7 on 7 league, Ferg allows linemen to be eligible. In "ultimate Frisbee" - a strictly "ultimate Caucasian" sport they let all there players go out for passes. Explain why Ferg rules mesh with this concept, taking away from the talents of some strong linemen? Is Ferg biased in favor of WRs?

Well madcap, to my knowledge, the JoeFerg rules are straight. Elgible lineman, is not that hard to cover. You guys are just not used to it, so i could see why it would cause a problem. The only thing I disagree with the NOVA rules is that the leave room for more bitching and its inconsistent. Example 1 of bitching: Down field blocking. [Billy], screamed and bitched the entire game when he was blocked from the side or basically anything close to being able to be called blocking in the back.

If you want to go out and play tough physical football, unless somebody just straight pushes you in the back, STFU and play football. Instead, he'd rather argue about something that is totally judgmental by the ref/mod, and take another 10min arguing with the most harmless ref/mod as to why he didn't make the call.

Example 2 of inconsistency: You guys say you want lineman to be lineman, but yet you don't make the center snap the ball. Allowing the QB, to take it off the centers back, takes out the possible error of your center messing up a snap or your center actually having to snap then block. It's just not consistent.

And my last example, is the "No points rewarded for a safety". This is arguably the dumbest rule you guys have. If you think about it, there are instances where it's strategically better for the offense to get a safety. If it's 4th and long and you're backed up near your end zone, why not just take a safety. This way you don't have to punt and prevent the possibility they could gain significant yardage on the return. It's basically just like a long punt with no return. Since no points are rewarded, it benefits you more to take the safety then to punt the ball or go for it.

Would you consider joining Novaffl for the Spring season, considering prices are dirt cheap - as a player or General manager?

I would be open to it, considering you guys play less than a mile from my house, lol. Actually, Big Ron asked me in the past to come out and play, but for whatever reason it just didn't happen...

Any final words or comments?

Sanfran is a BUM. he is everything that is wrong with competitive flag football. He is the guy trying to re-live a dream that never surfaced. I hope Nick and Billy aren't considered some of NOVA's finest. Let's get it back in this weekend, this is probably the last weekend, we'll be able to play for months.
