Coffee Cozy Sewing Pattern

Sew a Reusable Coffee Cozy to Envy

Phebe A. Durand
No one can understand the truth until he drinks of coffee's frothy goodness. ~Sheik Abd-al-Kadir

I'm many things. Obsessive by nature, a horrible housekeeper, and an absolute coffee addict. It's perhaps my coffee addiction that is the strongest. It permeates my home from the smell of fresh-ground beans to hot cups constantly pouring, in the sight of coffee plants growing, and the cupboard absolutely filled with coffee cups in a variety of sizes and colors, commercial and handmade.

There's something about coffee on the go, though, that is always appealing. Wrapping your hands around a hot cup of coffee, steaming from the counter, and taking it away with you is some form of nirvana.

Want to make the experience that much better? Try crafting this gorgeous little coffee cozy. Not only are they pretty enough to make the other customers envious, but they're reusable - so much better than those things shops slip on there to be thrown away.

Materials Needed for Coffee Cozy

2 Fat Quarters of Fabric - Matching, or Contrasting

Stiff Interfacing

8 Eyelets & Eyelet Setter

12-15" Ribbon, ½"-1" wide

Sewing Machine or sewing needle, Thread, Scissors

Sewing the Coffee Cozy

These little beauties are actually very easy to finish, making them great for quick gift giving. Take some time choosing your fabrics. Using contrasting colors for the inside and outside of the cozy makes a really nice statement, but matching fabric looks just as pretty. You can also use recycled denim, canvas, or cotton from dress shirts to create these cozies.

1. Print the pattern. It will fit on a single sheet of regular computer paper. Then, cut the pattern out. If you will be hand-sewing the cozy, you will want to trim off some of the seam allowance (the gray border).

2. Pin the pattern to the fabric and stiff interfacing, cutting 1 piece from each.

3. Place fabric right-sides together, and place the interfacing over the top. Sew around the cozy, using a ¼" seam allowance on a sewing machine (sew nearer the edges if hand-sewing), leaving an opening for turning.

4. Turn the cozy right-side out and blind-stitch the opening closed. Press so that all edges are flat and all corners are crisp. Then, sew a border ¼" inside the cozy all the way around. Optionally, you can also quilt the cozy after the border has been made for extra visual interest.

5. Mark the placement for each eyelet, 4 on each side. Set the eyelets according to the instructions included with your eyelet setter. Then, run the ribbon through the eyelets, starting at the top of the cozy and ending at the bottom with a large bow.

Optional Extras & Alterations

Want to add a little something more to your coffee cozy? Try one of these ideas:

1. Slip a large bead or thread a button over the top line of ribbon.

2. Use a solid color for the fabric, and embroider or appliqué a design on the finished piece.

3. Add a border of ¼" bias tap in a contrasting color around the cozy.

4. Sew a lace border to the top edge of the cozy.

5. Embellish with ribbon flowers, patches, or iron-on transfers.
