Coffee, with Cream and Sugar

A Poetic Love Story

April Higney
Beads of perspiration, dripped along his temple,

as he dug his shovel deeper into the soil.

Rustling leaves and playful squirrels in a game of chase.

The smell of coffee brewing, the aroma passing along on the air.

A faint sound of a spoon against glass, swirling in cream and sugar.

At this hour, becoming late in the day, a smile, pleasurable sound,

he turns to peer upon his home.

The windows are closed.

A thought they should be open,

strangely seemed they were.

Tall grass swaying, yellow highlights of the sun.

A honey bee hovers, slightly undecided, then settles upon the sweetness of a daisy.

The sky turning gently orange over softly stretched clouds.

He watched, far into the distance,

searching for her shadow coming across the fields.

Awaiting her, his stance held by the handle of the shovel,

as though he could not hold himself up as thoughts of her passed through his mind.

He could feel her touch, embracing him around his waist,

soft kiss at the corner of his neck as each breeze drifted through,

and the whispers,

"I love you"

seems he could still hear them.

He watched, far into the distance,

searching for her shadow coming across the fields.

The tall grass sways side to side,

as though forming a path,

she emerges, her hair dances along her shoulders,

in the wind, lit in softness with the setting sun,

her summer dress with purple lilacs and white soft cotton.

"I planted for you, your favorite flowering trees." his words.

He turns just enough to show her the view.

The flowering trees, fully grown,

the pond, filled, with frogs jumping.

He smiles, peering out the window, open, to take in the breeze.

The smell of coffee brewing, late in the day.

The sound of a spoon against glass, swirling in cream and sugar,

she smiles as she hands him his cup,

still her beauty takes his breath away.

Together, whispers, "I love you."

Together, holding hands and sipping coffee, they reflect,

fall in love all over again, every day.

Back in Boston, coffee with cream and two sugars was called 'Regular.' There is nothing 'regular' about your writing. It is excellent!

Once again April, just beautiful. I can see her dress in full color and I can see how he looks for her with love in his eyes. The imagery is just wonderful!
