Coffee Lowers Prostate Cancer Risk

Coffee lowers prostate cancer risk

According to new research it seems that drinking coffee lowers prostate cancer risk. In previous articles I have discussed my attempts to give up caffeine; so far I've failed. So this news about coffee actually doing me some good is welcome. It also makes me feel a bit less guilty about my failed attempts to beat my coffee addiction.

A study by the American Association for Cancer Research has found that men who drank the most coffee were about sixty percent less likely to develop advanced prostate cancer than people who did not drink coffee. These results are certainly impressive; although those conducting the research make it clear that they are not suggesting that everyone begin drinking lots of coffee due to the results of this one study. The one thing that the study does seem to suggest is that protecting your prostate from cancer will no longer be a reason for stopping coffee.

This research which showed that coffee lowers prostate cancer risk was conducted over twenty years and involved 50,000 men. The results demonstrated that men who drank 1-3 cups a day lowered their advanced prostate cancer risk by twenty percent, while those who drank more than 6 cups lowered their risk by sixty percent.

Researchers do not believe that it is the caffeine that is causing the result. Apparently the same effect can be found when people drink decaffeinated coffee. There still needs to be more studies to find out what ingredients are causing the reduction; the beverage is believed to work in a number of ways. One interesting element may be fact that coffee also lowers the risk of type two diabetes. In the past there has been a link found between high insulin levels and the development of prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is the second deadliest cancer among men in the United States with almost thirty thousand dying from it every year. Many other people die around the world so if coffee lowers prostate cancer risk this will be great news.

There are many drawbacks to drinking too much coffee, but it is nice to hear some good news about this beverage for a change. I would still like to reduce my intake even if coffee reduces the risk of prostate cancer. Perhaps the same prostate-protecting effect can be found elsewhere in something without the negative effects of too much coffee.
