It is not very often that I receive the opportunity to hang-out at the local coffee shop these days as my family and professional responsibilities keep me extremely busy. I usually take my coffee to go. However, when I receive a moment to myself or in between the soccer mom pick-up and drop-offs, I love to chill with my husband and enjoy a cup of coffee at these Middlesex County New Jersey local coffee spots.

Brewed Awakening Coffeehouse located in Metuchen New Jersey (417 Main St, 732-744-9700) is reminiscent of the SOHO coffeehouses in New York City. The ambiance is warm, cozy and downright relaxing. You can bet that you will in run into an old friend or neighbor which lends itself to great conversation. The menu has coffee, breakfast items, sandwiches and wraps. The tea selection is mot as fancy as a Starbucks but I think this place has something for everyone. They have free Wi-Fi access and nice comfy sofas and chairs so you can get loads of work done.

Lucca's & Co Coffeehouse also located in Metuchen New Jersey (416 Main St, 732-767-1511) in fact it is directly across the street from Brewed Awakening. It is amazing to see that neither of these shops has put the other out of business. I think the secret lies in the clientele and the distinct products they offer. Lucca's does not offer the meal selections like Brewed Awakening but they pride themselves on the coffees, lattes and espresso. They have many coffeehouse treats like biscotti and fresh bake goods. All of which are very yummy. It is not unusual to see locals enjoying the sidewalk seating and a nice coffee till the midnight hour.

PJ's Coffee located in Highland Park New Jersey (www.pjscoffee.com) is a franchised concept with a majority of it's' stores in Louisiana. Now, in general I always prefer locally established eateries over franchised but in this case I must make an exception. I think the coffee, service, ambiance are just perfect for a town that sits very close to the college crowd of Rutgers University. This establishment is always busy and the food is tasty. The prices are a bit high but in comparison to Starbucks it is reasonable. This location has limited hours which about the only real drawback. If you are in need of a great cup of coffee and are in the Highland Park area, definitely give PJ's Coffee a try.

There is nothing like a cup of hot coffee on a cool night to warm the heart and feed the soul. It somehow makes you feel good all over. I know for me it helps me to relax and unwind and on those days that have been extremely difficult, it helps put everything back into perspective. So get out and spend sometime at the local coffeehouse and see what it can do for you.
