Coincidence, Predestination or Something Else

You Make the Call

Han Van Meegerin
What causes a sequence of events to be set in motion? Is everything predestined to unfold according to a script, is everything that occurs just a random coincidence or is it the result something else all together? These are the types of questions that have perpetually aroused the collective human curiosity throughout the ages.

This morning I set down my eyeglasses during the morning rush of trying to get the kids off to school, curbing the garbage and trying to ready myself for work. I didn't realize that they were missing until after I was showered and dressed. Upon this realization, I scoured the house searching for them. My efforts were in vain. No matter how many times I retraced my steps, I could not make a successful discovery.

Today I worked from home. As I attempted to conduct some business and finish several projects for Associated Content, I found myself periodically sneaking a peek in one or more rooms in the house to see if I could spot my eyewear. Each successive look continued to produce no fruit.

Lately, I have struggled to ready something for publication on Associated Content. This theme has remained consistent whether I am trying to put the finishing touches on a self proclaimed literary wonder or simply updating several page view race articles and slideshows. I simply have not completed the tasks at hand.

My efforts today were continuing along this same course, like a ship lost out at sea. At some point in my day's voyage, I noticed that I was a bit hungry. I went to the cabinet and grabbed a package of Ritz Crackers. As I walked back to my computer, I proceeded to open the package of crackers. Of course the package tore and the crackers fell all over the deck of the kitchen. The dog looked up with hope in her eyes as I cursed under my breath. As I turned to my right to set the empty package down and begin to clean up my mess, to my surprise sitting on top of a bin of crayons were my glasses.

So now I ask you the reader to consider what I have told you and explain what caused this sequence of events to be set in motion? All I know is that I found my glasses. I was also able to utilize this experience to break the chains that bound me and create the piece of work that you just finished reading..

If you don't believe in coincidence, tell me everything that is going to happen to you to tomorrow.

Always so intriguing, Han! I'm happy to read and comment on this..Thanks!

Why is it that things we lose are always in the last place we look for them? (Humor here, Han - if we find something we stop looking for it, so that is the last place we looked)

I think some things are coincidence, but other things are not. I guess a person has to look back on the occurences and decide if they seem like a natural sequence of events or something more. I'm glad you found your glasses. I hate it when that happens! Entertaining and thought-provoking read!

I lose mine all the time. Glad you found them. I would like to think you became hungry for the cracker, and then spilled them, in order to find your glasses but who knows for sure?

This is almost always how things play out for me! Usually it's because I'm doing 10 things at a time.

Hi Han, Just wanted to put my 2 cents in again. I don't think the eye glasses thing was predestined or coincidence. If you are like I am I've got 10 things going on at once and my brain doesn't like to keep up, so I'm not as observant as I should be about things going on around me, or exactly what I'm doing. A lot of the stuff is out of repetition and doesn't usually take much thought so I tend to overlook things. Well, that's my 2 cents. Just too much going on at once (especially in the morning) to be totally observant.

I buy glasses at the dollar store, and have to buy 5 or 6 pair every month. Do the others just disintegrate? I don't know. Today I'm looking for the brown mustard for sausage. I used it yesterday but today it's nowhere. So welcome to my world, Han!
