Col. Van T. Barfoot, 90, Wins Battle Against Virginia HOA to Fly the Flag

Medal of Honor Recipient Victorious in Battle Against Homeowners Association

Tony Jingo
On Tuesday, December 01, the Sussex Square homeowners association (HOA) in Virginia threatened legal action against 90-year old Van T. Barfoot if he did not take down his flagpole from his yard by 5 p.m. Friday.

Barfoot noted that there is no provision in Sussex Square's rules that forbids erecting flagpoles. For the Barfoot family flying the American Flag is a cause worth fighting for.

Van T. Barfoot is a retired Army Colonel that bravely defended our Freedoms in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Col Barfoot is a recipient of the Medal of Honor and Purple Heart.

Col. Barfoot, while fighting during WWII in Carano, Italy, single-handedly destroyed a set of German machine gun nests, killed eight enemy soldiers, took 17 prisoners and stared down a tank before destroying it and killing its crew AND managed to move two of his wounded men 1,700 yards to safety. Col. Van T. Barfoot did all this in a single day!

The Sussex Square HOA refused to make an exception for this man.

Folks, this is an American story and should transcend partisan politics. Patriotism is not owned by any given Party. I have no idea how Col. Barfoot votes and quite frankly, I do not care. I do know that Barfoot is an American hero and an honored Defender of Freedom that deserves our respect and gratitude. Democratic Senators Warner and Webb agreed and championed the cause.

Veterans' groups rallied resulting in national media attention. Obama's spokesman called the HOA request "silly." For an excellent retelling of the colonel's heroics check out Mark Levin's commentary.

On December 08, it was reported that the Sussex Square HOA agreed to stop their legal action against Van T. Barfoot. The retired Army Colonel is now free to fly the Flag in his front yard.

This is reminiscent of the management of the Oaks Apartments in Oregon ordering the residents to stop displaying the American Flag on their apartments and/or vehicles, more on that here.

Col Van T. Barfoot at 90-years old is one of the oldest living World War II veterans who received the Medal of Honor; Barfoot is not alone in that distinction.

Please meet John William Finn who at 100-years old is our nation's oldest living Medal of Honor recipient and also the only living Pearl-Harbor-Day Medal of Honor recipient.

Thank you, Col. Barfoot, for your service. All those who have served deserve recognition and respect by all of us. Some may not always agree with the wars we are fighting, but the boys always go...they always do. That is what makes us the greatest country in the world. My son gave all in Iraq...God Bless America.....Home of the Free....Land of the Brave.

I would like to commend our hero Barfoot, stick with the flag; you are a free person and so are the HMO people because you and many others fought to keep that freedom for them, for us!!! I am sick and tired of HMO's and their authority in such manners, we have had enough of the liberals and their demands regarding GOD and our country. We also have the RIGHT to LIVE, WORSHIP and Keep GOD in our lives no matter how hard they try to get rid of GOD! The only book that has been around for centuries has been and is the top seller for centuries our BIBLES. They should try reading and understanding where we are coming from. We have let 2% of the country decide many laws that are not within the scope of our BIBLE, it is time to take a stand. Our kids in schools are mean, bullies, liars, and no respect for authority. We need GOD in our schools, what is wrong with these people???

Thank you Col.Barfoot. Through your actions, I feel as if we are not a lost Nation. As the daughter of a Veteran, God Bless you. One Nation Under God. I remember the Pledge of Allgiance and when prayer was allowed in schools. Now it is not, More people need to follow your example and stand for something in this Country. If we don't we will be ruled by those not of our Nation. With my deepest respect, thank you again for all that you endured and gave in the name of our freedom, fly your flag you earned the right many times over, all Veterans need to fly the flag, We as American people need to stand for something by standing up to those who would have us do other wise.

For Robert O Adair: if you have had success in discovering Col Barfoot's mailing address, please share with me. I am in the process of locating WWII vets who served in France. They are eligible for the French Legion of Honor, and I suspect that Col Barfoot didn't stop in Italy but continued on to France, making him eligible. Time may be of the essence, as only living vets are eligible. The application process is simple, just a discharge certificate and/or orders conferring decorations, etc. Any questions, contact me by e-mail or call (719) 761-5756, or snailmail 6510A S Academy Blvd, Colorado Springs, CO 80906. Thanks. Derel Schrock, Col, USAF (ret)

The world should know that the HOA has the capability of making these stupid demands on this soldier because he and others had the courage to fight for their freedom and their rights. Instead of picking on him they should be thanking him for his courage and integrity.

  • Robert O. Adair7/15/2010

Well, I'd like to have an address of this courageous soldier so I could send a letter personally thanking him for serving our country!

The only thing missing from this article and the comments so far, is the MAILING ADDRESS OF THE SUSSEX SQUARE HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION to which we can direct the cuss-letters of disdain for the punks therein... GET MAD, folks... The SCUM at this homeowners' association will just DO IT AGAIN to the NEXT veteran, OR YOU...

Van T. Barfoot "Medal Of Honor"

Injustice oh injust, a Medal of Honor recipient put to the test,
Over the flag of a country he served, giving his ultimate best,
Heading east from Carthage in Mississippi, State Route # 16,
After a few miles the sign, Edinburg, you'll see what I mean.

This quiet unassuming fellow, a little history so you'll know,
Just in front of his residence, he wanted to put up a flagpole,
Serving in World War II, Korea & a stint in South Viet Nam,
Received our nations, "Medal of Honor" from his Uncle Sam.

With, "Stars & Stripes" in his yard, neighbors had other plans,
Medal of Honor, served in 3 wars, big deal, who gives a damn?
These suburban folks in Virginia, they had rules of their own,
And would not leave this 90 year-old decorated veteran alone.

Born June 15, 1919, Van T. Barfoot, didn't mean much then,
However, 25 years later, May 23, 1944, heroics would begin,
German machine gun positions, bullets like rain falling down,
    Courage
