COLD SORES

Tips & Treatment

f.w.
The cold sore virus (herpes simplex virus) is caught by personal contact and once you get it , you will have it for life. Nobody is immune to cold sores and celebrities have been photographed self-consciously trying to cover them up. The average rate is 7 out of 10 people suffer from the virus and some that have it do not even realize it. Herpes Simplex can lie dormant in our immune system and our own body can't make antibodies to fight it off. It is usually triggered by stress, overwork, a depleted immune system or a shock. Other attributes associated with triggering the virus is cold weather, windy weather, menstruation and UV light.

When you trigger the virus it travels along the nerve and erupts as a sore, usually around the mouth, around your eyes or in your nostrils. Many people who live a hectic lifestyle, do not have a proper nutritious meals or have high stress levels are more prone to outbreaks due to a depleated immune system. There are treatments you can use in order to help prevent the virus developing into a large blister. The moment you feel the tell-tale tingle you should apply an anit-viral cream. One of the best on the market is Fenistil, a new cream, which claims to "clear scold sores in three to five days." However, if your cold sore has already erupted into an unsightly blister try using Cold Sore Patches. These are tiny, clear plasters that you put over the blister. These plasters keep germs out and help in the natural healing process.

The best treatment is prevention and this includes sleep to boost your immune system, healthy eating, if out in the sun wear a hat or sunscreen to protect from UV light, correct diet and don't kiss anyone with a cold sore. Make sure that your diet is rich in iron which is found in nuts, seeds, meat and dark green leafy veg as well as Vitimin C which assists your body in absorbing iron. Certain other foods which include oats, soya, chocolate, pasta, biscuits and bread may attribute to your cold sore virus because they include the amino acid arginine. To counteract the effects of these foods it is suggested that you take the amino acid lysine.

I have found that if left untreated cold sores can also manifest themselves as sores and cracks at the corners of the mouth in what must be an associated complaint, Angular Cheilitis. A very strong temptation is to lick the lips but of course, popular misconception that this assists the healing and alleviates pain is incorrect as it will only serve to make the problem worse. Enjoyed your posts thank you. Regards. Ash

I got one cold sore in the corner of my lips when I was thirteen. Took almost a month to go away. Luckily I haven't gotten any since then. Good article!

I am one of the lucky ones who has never gotten a cold sore.. Thankfully. On the other hand my husband always gets them. Especially if there is a stressful situation that is happening. As he has gotten older he has learned the feeling of when a cold sore is going to show itself and treats it immediately before it comes out in full. The only medication that has worked for him is Campho Phenic.Burns like hell im told but works like a charm for him... Great article. !!
