Cold Steel and Ice Water

Arlene Mason

She felt the cold steel of the knife blade as it pierced her skin. She tried to speak, to scream, but nothing came out, only a gurgling gasp. "What the hell?" She thought. "Who did this, and why?"

"So," said a male voice that she did not recognize. "How does it feel to be stabbed in the back?"

She gasped.

"I thought so."

She heard footfalls going away from her, as she slumped slowly to the floor.

Minutes, maybe hours passed, as she lay on the floor, unable to breathe, feeling the warmth of her blood as it flowed out onto the carpet. She began to feel a chill, she shivered as her brain started to go fuzzy. Her vision began to blur at the edges. The blood on the carpet felt cold as she toppled onto it, unable to stop herself. Her vision was but a pinpoint now. Her thoughts raced. She thought of everything she had yet to do with her life, how she wanted to see her granddaughter grow up and get married. How she wanted to greet her brother upon his release from prison. She wanted to cry, but was too weak for tears. She could feel her life slipping away. At the very last moment of her life, her final thought was of her beautiful granddaughter. She smiled, slightly, and exhaled her final breath.
