Cold Weather Boots for Deer Hunting

J Deyoe
Spending the first half of my growing up in Upstate NY, I know just how cold the winters get, and just how icy. I know that if you don't have good warm boots with good soles, you can freeze your feet and fall down and get hurt. After moving out to the Midwest, all I hear people talk about is Cabela's. The top picks for good winter hunting boots for icy conditions will all be from Cabela's on line store.

The first boot that caught my eye because of its soles was the Cabela's Outfitter Series Pro Hunting Boots. I know someone who only wears these exact boots when colder weather starts. These boots feature Gore-Tex, Scent Lock, and a multidirectional rugged sole that has drafted edges to grip the ground and expel snow and mud. These boots come in 11 inch and 9 inch height, and different strengths of Thinsulate, from 400 grain to 1,200. For cold icy regions, I would suggest the 1,200 grain boot. They also feature laces that extend towards the toe more, to add to your stability. These boots sell for $179.99.

The second pair of boots that I found is the Cabela's Switchback Hunting Pac Boots. These boots are 100% waterproof, and come in 800 and 1,400 gram Thinsulate. They have a Dry-Plus membrane and a rubber shell that work together to make this boot water proof. A 3/4 rubber shell gives your ankles extra support. They feature the Mossy Oak Break-up pattern. These boots sell for $119.99 for the 800 grain, and $129.99 for the 1,400 grain.

The third pair that I found is the Cabela's Tracker Dry Plus Hunting Boots. These boots are insulated with 1,000 gram Thinsulate, and feature 100% Dry Plus waterproof membrane. Also featured on this boot is Vibram Bighorn modified air bob outsoles to give your more traction in the icy weather. This particular pair has a 10" height. They also feature the Mossy Oak Break-up design. This pair is available in wides EE and D. Currently this pair of boots normally priced at $99.95, is on sale at $69.99.

The fourth pair of boots that have good soles and insulation for deer hunting in the icy cold weather is the Irish Setter Gunflint Hunting Boots. These boots have breathable Gore-Tex lining that makes them 100% waterproof, rugged full-grain leather with Cordura nylon uppers. It also features 800 grain Thinsulate insulation, great for moderately cold weather, but not for extreme situations, or for standing still in. They also have Goodyear leather welt construction to add toe the durability of this boot. It also features the Wide-Track Bulls eye air bob sole, great for hunting in the woods and on rocky areas. This pair of boots is listed at $99.95, and has a five star rating from customer reviews.

The fifth pair of boots is the Rocky Bear Claw hunting boot. This is the pair that I would buy if I were to be out in the cold and icy weather again. This pair features not one but two views of the two designs it has, one being the Mossy Oak Break-up, the other in Real Tree AP. These boots have the breathable 100% waterproof Gore-Tex lining, 1,000 gram Thinsulate lining, and also has the 1,000 denier Cordura nylon for durability. These also feature an extra thick AirPort foot bed for air circulation. The aggressive Bear Claw outsoles are great for gripping in hard and soft soil, and great traction on icy ground. These boots come in 9" height. The price for this great pair of boots is $159.99, and have a five star customer rating.
