The key is to be comfortable, scout the conditions before you step outside. I would defiantly suggest that you stay indoors if the wind is over 10mph. This is not only makes it harder, but really quite miserable. I have been out in almost every type of element in my younger days and I hope the following article helps everyone out a little bit in the Winter Months.
Below are a few tips I have found useful in staying comfortable in this wicked weather! I hope I can serve as the Ginnie pig for new golfers out there and can help them prepare for the cold!
1. Find Which One You Are: There are two types of golfers, those that walk and those that ride. Walking is typically best in cold weather as it keeps you moving and the wind does not affect you as much as driving in a cart at 10mph. So stay moving! If you are a rider, I have thrown in a few items you need to stay warm as well.
2. What You Need: Here is a quick list for walkers and riders that will help you get by:
Walkers:
a. Long Underwear! A warm, thin layer, top and bottom.
b. Extra Pair Of Socks. Thin thermal socks work the best.
c. Winter Golf Gloves - The thinner the better.
d. Rain Gear - Helps Keep You Insulated and will keep the wind from going through you.
e. Stocking Cap - Anything to cover the head and ears.
f. Hot Hands/Tostie Toes Hand And Foot Warmers
Riders:
All the above plus:
a. Golf Cart Cover - Keeps The Wind Out!!
b. Portable Propane Heater - These Are So Nice!! It may be 30 outside, but inside the cart cover it is in the 60's!
I hope this helps. Those of you who have been out in the cold know what to do, the key is to find the most coverage to keep you warm and still be able to make a swing with. You don't want to be wrapped up like a Mummy, but you don't want to be cold either! If you can afford the cart cover and propane heater, I would defiantly suggest that route, it really does make a difference and makes the day that much more enjoyable.
Good Luck This Winter!!
