Cold Weather Killer

Want to Stay Warm?

J Gorman
To mark the beginning of February, the winter season is finally upon us. Many see this as a sign of impending global warming.

So far in this winter season, we have experienced fall weather. It seems as though each year, the snow falls a little later. The weather gets a little colder in the winter and a little warmer in the summer.

Although nay-sayers will continue to persist, scientists say this extreme cold weather is a sign of global warming. Global warming is not just the gradual daily increase in heat that we see, but more-so the wild extremes.

Florida just had an unnaturally wicked tornado pass through, and crazy weather is continually being seen all over the country.

And wild is just what we are seeing. In western New York, snowfall has reached a height of above three feet. In the north central part of the same state, the snowfall count has reached five feet.

Just outside the twin cities in Minnesota, a forty vehicle pile-up occurred. There were also 240 vehicle accidents in the same area. In Minneapolis, the below-freezing weather has cause ninety thousand children to be out of school.

Most kids love to get out of school due to bad weather. Let's face it, playing in the snow is fun. But it is of utmost importance to know how to stay warm both inside and out. Here are a few tips:

First of all, make sure your furnace is working properly. If you haven't had it cleaned this past year, you might want to think about scheduling an appointment.

If you are using a kerosene heater, don't use it to the extent that you allow your house pipes to freeze. It will ultimately be more expensive to deal with frozen pipes than to run a little oil through your house.

If you're planning on going on winter trip, pack for colder weather than you expect. This way, you will be ready for whatever obstacles happen to come your way. Remember layers!

In terms of your diet, remember to eat plenty of carbohydrates and protein. But also, a little bit of fat helps your body a lot in the winter.

Now, you need to be sure to drink plenty of fluids. Caffeine and alcohol are not good for cold weather. Warm liquids such as decaffeinated tea are great. Cold drinks won't help make you warmer, but something cool is still acceptable.

Overall, use common sense and you will stay warm!
