A son of WW Time Warp and Hey Bell Dancer, Coldwater Torres was born on November 17th, 2004. When he was only seventeen months only, he schooled officially for the first time at Phoenix Greyhound Park, finishing second on April 10th, 2006 in a six dog race. His next time out he trounced six other greyhounds in 30.65 over the 5/16ths of a mile course and after that he took his third and last schooling effort by a couple of lengths. Coldwater Torres made his first Phoenix start that counted on April 21st, going off an overwhelming favorite at odds of 1-1 from the five box in a Maiden contest.
Less than 31 seconds later, Coldwater Torres had his first Phoenix victory as he breezed to a six length decision over his competition. In grade J, he drew a one hole and promptly flew to a six and a half length win in 30.79. His grade D win was easily his most impressive so far as he churned out to a huge lead and kept widening it, crossing the line a full eleven lengths in front of his foes. Things got much harder when Coldwater Torres advanced to the next level on the grading ladder, but he managed to hold on to an early advantage by a head to make it to B.
A four length win in 30.52 sent Torres to Grade A, where he encountered his first taste of defeat in a Phoenix official race. When he failed to get the lead for the first time in his six starts, Torres was beaten, finishing fourth. He quickly rebounded with a narrow victory his next time out and found himself in with the elite of the Phoenix sprinters, going to post in a Grade AA affair on June 2nd. Breaking alertly from the two hole, Coldwater Torres romped by eight lengths in 30.54 and showed it was no fluke when he scored by three and a half in 30.40 seconds on June 11th. But he looked very beatable in his next half dozen outings as he could only make the front of the race twice in those six tries, winning just once.
If the Phoenix faithful were beginning to have doubts about Coldwater Torres he began to erase them starting on August 2nd. He handled his AA field handily in 30.69, beginning a streak that saw him win eleven of his next twelve times out. Included in that impressive work were skeins of four and seven in a row, with the last of those seven being by twelve lengths in a clocking of 30.35. After a fourth place finish due to a rough trip, Coldwater Torres ripped off another mini-streak, taking three consecutive races. His win on November 3rd was his quickest trip around the Phoenix Greyhound Park oval yet, a rapid 30.23.
An early bump made him miss the board on November 11th but since then Coldwater Torres hasn't been out of the quiniela at Phoenix. In the first week of December he was entered into the Juvenile Championship and in the opening rounds he ran a strong second place and then was run down at the wire by Charming Allure, only the second time he failed to win a race at Phoenix after being in the lead at the far turn. Torres atoned for this by winning his next two, catapulting himself into the finals which were held on December 15th. He drew an awful spot when he had to wear the yellow six blanket, with his toughest opposition on paper right outside of him in his sister, Coldwater Nikki, and the eight dog, the hard-charging Nurse Katie.
The box opened and out shot Coldwater Torres to the front. Nikki and Nurse Katie never got into the hunt, with Fasano chasing the fawn male down the track, unable to keep pace. At the wire it was Coldwater Torres by two and a half lengths in a time of 30.27. The champ went off the people's choice at 3-2 odds and did not disappoint anyone, winning his 28th race of the year. After a month-long layoff, Torres has returned to the Phoenix races as fresh as a daisy, with three wins in his first four 2007 starts. On January 29th he broke the thirty second barrier with a time of 29.97 for the 1,650 foot distance. Coldwater Torres bears close watching as the year unfolds down in the Arizona desert, as he is bound to be at the forefront of the action at Phoenix Greyhound Park.
