"The King's Speech" tells the story of King George VI, who had to overcome his stammer to lead his country. The Hampshire born actor has received nothing but praise for his incredible performance as the "stammering King" and already won a BAFTA for Best Actor earlier this month.
At last night's Ocsars, he triumphed again, fighting off competition from the likes of James Franco and Jeff Bridges to be named the Academy's Best Actor for 2011.
On accepting his award, Firth joked, "I have a feeling my career's just peaked." Unlikely. If anything, his career will continue to sky rocket after winning such a respected prize.
Colin Firth also expressed his deep desire to begin dancing, but managed to control himself long enough to finish his acceptance speech. He thanked his co-stars Geoffrey Rush, Helena Bonham Carter and Guy Pearce, and made a special mention of "The King's Speech" writer, David Seidler who overcame a speech impediment of his own.
Firth's final thanks went to his family, particularly his wife for, "putting up with my fleeting delusions of royalty".
It was an amazing night all round for Colin Firth. Not only did he win the award for Best Actor, "The King's Speech" picked up three other awards, including the coveted Best Picture award.
There is no doubt that Colin Firth deserved his Academy Award last night. After many years as being one of the best actors in the film industry it was fantastic to see him finally getting the credit he deserves.
