Colin Powell Endorses Barack Obama

Clark Richards
Colin Powell appeared on Meet the Press this morning and as expected endorsed Barack Obama for president. He went through a long litany of reasons for his endorsement and one can only believe that he has given the issue much thought. Many admirers, me among the multitude, will no doubt be disappointed. On the other hand, just as many would have been disappointed had he endorsed John McCain.

Colin Powell meets the test of an American hero and patriot in my mind. His career has been exemplary and he has truly risen from a humble past to a position of national prominence. His book, "My American Journey" is an inspirational account of his life and should be required reading for all young adults beginning a job or entering a career. The determination to succeed was instilled in his character by his parents, and after a few missteps, he practiced well the examples which they set. One can hope that Barack Obama takes to heart the lessons and knowledge that has been acquired and demonstrated by Colin Powell.

A few years ago Colin Powell was suggested as a presidential candidate and I was excited about the possibility regardless of what party he aligned himself with. I truly believed he would act in the best interests of all Americans. Sadly, I am not so certain about the motives of Barack Obama. Many Americans would be comforted if Barack Obama were to chose Colin Powell to serve in a prominent capacity in government, should he be elected. I hope he is inspired to do so.

My vote will not change as a result of this endorsement. Some will.

It boggles my mind that Colin would endorse someone who sites gangster rapper Jay Z as an inspiration.

Kelly, I am confused. Is General Powell unable to see the tactics that the Obama camp is utilizing? I find it odd also that he would mention Sarah Palin's lack of experience when the candidate he endorsed has less qualifications than any candidate in history. What I find the most interesting is that the day after his endorsement Obama vowed to make him a part of the administration... Quid Pro Quo maybe????

You don't have to change your mind or your vote. I don't think that was the point of General Powell's endorsement. I think he felt honor bound to say some things out loud. Both candidates are good and honorable men, both capable of being president. Gen. Powell was dismayed with the conduct of the current campaign and the false issues that were allowed to permeate. It was the deciding factor for him because it reflected the character of a potential administration. We are all free to feel differently, but I think Gen. Powell wanted to tamp down the lies. Your article was very fair and respectful, which is what I thought Gen. Powell's statements were as well.

Powell is misleading the American people with his allegations against McCain. It is sad to see a man who I believed to be a Patriot allow his ideology to trump his Patriotism...Barack 0bama would not be able to honestly take the same oath our troops make..to protect us from both foreign and domestic terrorists...for a former general to endorse such a subversive candidate to be the next commander in chief..is very sad. There are 300 retired Army generals & admirals that support McCain..I only hope their voices are heard as well..but we all know that won't happen..as the MSM (an extension of the 0bama campaign) will eat the Powell endorsement up to further the radical agenda..what a sorry state of affairs.

Virginia is endorsing Obama too. Virginia is now a blue state.

I agree with you that Powell is an esteemed American hero whom I greatly admire but I have to take issue with his reasoning for his endorsement. He claims the negative turn of the McCain campaign facilitated his decision completely ignoring the treatment, smears and tearing down of Sarah Palin all which occured before the Ayers push. I am also scratching my head over Powell's explanation for Obama's desire of spreading the wealth as if mailing rebate checks to non-tax payers is equivalent to my tax dollars going for roads and infrastructure. Powell sounds good but his reasoning is faulty.
