Collectible Cookie Jars Are Most Precious when Used

Cartoon Characters and Advertising Characters Are Two Popular Cookie Jar Favorites

Mary Martin
Cookie jars have been loved by family members for years. Everyone remembers the cookie jars their grandmas used as well as the cookie jar their mom used. Special treats came from those treasured jars all year long. Many cookie jars end up with broken lids, lids that have been glued together or even lids that are gone. The cookie jar may also have suffered some damage from years of use. If the jar is not broken the paint is oftentimes worn off in some areas. The cookie jar remains a family favorite and is treasured not matter its condition.

Years ago most cookie jars were pottery or ceramic pieces many of which were shaped like animals or popular decorating items. Later the cookie jars were produced with advertising on them. Then the cookie jars began to be shaped like popular T.V. characters, cartoon characters, advertising characters or other popular items.

Ernie the Keebler Elf is pictured as a cookie jar with this article. This cookie jar is from 1989 and was produced as an advertising collectible. You could certainly fill the cookie jar with Keebler cookies. This cookie jar has held many kids of homemade cookies and made quite a few family members, especially grandchildren, very happy. When this cookie jar was most popular there were many, many Keebler commercials on the television. The Keebler Elf was a very popular guy. Everyone loved Ernie. And we all knew it took a little "elfin magic" to create those cookies. We also know that the Keebler Elves lived in strange little trees that had shuttered windows and housed the Elfin Bakery. No one knew exactly where that tree was though. I'm not sure who produced this cookie jar. The bottom of the cookie jar is stamped USA. No other marking is visible.

I do have another cookie jar. I have a Felix the Cat cookie jar. I have quite a few Felix the Cat items in my kitchen and the cookie jar is one of my favorites. This cookie jar is a great size. It will hold three or four dozen cookies, the lid is easy to handle and the jar is think enough to be sturdy. I use this cookie jar the most. It is always on my kitchen counter however it is usually only full when the grandchildren are there. This Felix the Cat cookie jar is the 2nd in the series by the Clay Art Ceramic Company. There are many other Felix the Cat cookie jars which are made by other companies. I do like this one best however. There is one with Felix coming out of his Magic Bag that is appealing but it is not large enough to hold as many cookies though.

You can find many delightful cookie jars by strolling though a local flea market or antique shop. You may be lucky enough to find a favorite character or a cookie jar that reminds you of one from your childhood.

Many people do purchase cookie jars as collectibles or art forms. And, that is fine; however I think they are even better if they are used. Then they really are collectible because there are memories attached to them. They will be remembered and bring back many pleasant memories for the generations of children and grandchildren that used them. What a wonderful way to develop fond family memories.

What fun for your grandkids. Things are always nicer when used, as put away they are useless.

I love cookie jars! I wish I had the room to collect them. I collect brown drip pottery and one of my favorite pieces is a cookie jar that I found last year. And, yes, I use it :)
