Collectible Mattel Barbie and Ken Dolls Featured as Icons
From The Addams Family to Mulder and Scully
The site is called Angeliczdreamz.com and it is a place that sells collectible editions of Barbie and Ken from Mattel. So what, you say? Yeah, so did I as first started scrolling down page, past the New Look Beach Fun Ken and the Friday Night Date set, though that one did pique my interest due to Barbie having Lucille Ball type red hair. But what really got me interested in these high-priced collectible Barbie and Ken sets was when I scrolled down to one featuring the two Mattel icons dressed as two other icons, Arthur and Guinevere. But what really grabbed my interest was when I got to the set featuring Ken and Barbie as Herman and Lily Munster. I mean you just can't appreciate Ken's versatility until you see him in built-up shoes and a nice proletarian suit with bolts sticking out of his neck.
Even better, however, was Barbie dressed as Morticia Addams. Next to Julie Newmar as Catwoman, Morticia Addams is my choice for the sexiest woman ever on a TV show. And, though I know it completely goes against the prevailing ideology, I happen to think that every woman should dye her hair jet black instead of going blonde. Mattel's blonde Barbie never looked better than a goth Barbie with long, black hair attired in that form-fitting Mortician Addams dress. Oh, and Ken never looked better than dressed in Gomez Addams' striped suit, not even the Ken who comes as James Bond.
I figured that an Addams Family Barbie and Ken was about as cool as it could get. And then I scrolled down to see Barbie and Ken as FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. Another redheaded Barbie, but this time with Gillian Anderson's lush auburn locks instead of Lucille Ball's garish red hair. And now that I think about it, Mulder often had that blank, dead stare that Ken has all the time. Creepy.
As it turns out, however, The X-Files is not the only science fiction entry in this series of Barbie collectibles. Have you ever thought what the starship Enterprise would look like with Ken and Barbie aboard? Well, heck, just watch any old episode and you'll find out . Seriously, though, there actually is a collectible set featuring Ken as one of those anonymous doomed-to-die on the planet below engineering officers in a yellow shirt, while Barbie pops up in one of those incredibly sexist, yet oh so sexy red miniskirts, carrying a tricorder.
In addition, Ken also makes appearances as a young, thin Frank Sinatra and as Elvis Presley. Ken also shows up with Fabio style long hair and an open shirt as he and Barbie appear as Jude Devereaux romance novel characters. And "Kenny" and Barbie come in a set featuring them as a country music duo.
Although these are quite cool collectibles and look to be of incredibly high quality, you do have to realize that they are collectibles, after all, and that means hefty prices. The Munsters set sold for $250 but is listed as sold out, so that may not really matter much. On the other hand the Barbie and Ken James Bond set is listed for $75.00 and still available. Even better is the Star Trek set, which sells for a mere $65.00.
Oh, and if you do happen to know where I can track down that version of the Addams Family theme sung by a Frank Sinatra impersonator-Toby Huss?-please let me know.

Post a CommentHow do I know which is the recalled one, mine has the shorter hair and no rubber bands .Thanks for any help!
The X files set has two versions. One was recalled because Barbie's hair was long and secured by rubber bands. The other is a short bob. The "must have" set has to be the Phantom of the Opera set by FAO Schwartz. I think they actually released it very briefly, so there are few out there. I think they are much more collectible than the Madame Alexander pop culture type dolls. I think Ken was supposed to look like Kirk and Barbie as the famous blonde nurse Rand (Gene's main squeeze, who later played Troi's mum.) I'm not sure though.
