For the amateur antique hunter, the best place to start looking for antiques is in your nearest charity shop. Take the time to browse among the books, brooches, rings, bracelets, necklaces for that special antique treasure you may well find there. Search among the toys too, in particular, teddy bears and old dolls. You can profit from toys by selling them on to avid collectors. Car-boot sales are another source of antique items. Look for china, ashtrays, vases, pictures or the odd old chair thrown out by someone who just wants to declutter! Old clothing may include vintage pieces of no further use to the owner, but of immense interest to you, the collector.Look for antique table-cloths, curtains, collars, handkerchiefs.
Little second-hand shops are a great place to browse, often holding the contents of house sales, and executor sales, and selling cheaply for a quick turn-over. Furniture auctions yield all sorts of antique items, you can experience the thrill of the bidding, see what is in demand, learn the monetary value of the various pieces and may'be pick up the occasional bargain to renovate and try your hand at selling on. You can also find worthwhile pieces for your own place. Old pictures, frames, old photographs and postcards are often to be found here, too. If you live in a big city, collecting antiques, you will find yourself haunting the antique markets, which may also provide you with a place to sell your own haul. There are also the big auction houses, such as Christie's or Sothebys, where you can spend a pleasant morning as an observer, without risking a penny, taking in the scene and perhaps seeing celebrities bid! You can garner ideas for an antiques niche for yourself.
Even if you live out in the wilds, or cannot get to a town or city, but have a computer and the internet, collecting antiques is feasible. Search for good quality antiques and you will find many bargains. You can try buying cheaply at one site, and putting up for a profit at another site, and even have the goods sent from the original seller to the new buyer without you having to touch them! Above all, enjoy collecting antiques!
