Collecting Comic Books: A Primer

Collecting Comic Books Can Be Fuin for Anyone!

Mike McQuillian
Collecting comic books can be a fun and occasionally lucrative hobby. Many people don't realize that an interest in superheroes is not a prerequisite to comic book collecting. Titles exist that fit into every genre, from superhero fiction to horror to high drama. Finding a comic book (or books) that you want to collect is just a matter of spending some time researching what comic books are available.

Buy What You Enjoy

The variety of comic books available may be daunting to new collectors. Not knowing where to start can turn people away from collecting comics. First, try something that looks interesting to you. It could be the cover, or some dialogue you read while flipping pages, but whatever excites your interest, start there.

If, on buying a few issues of the comic book that looked interesting, you enjoy reading it, stick with it. Most comics from major publishers from major publishers release new issues every month, so you won't have to wait long for new issues to read. If you find you don't like the comic you tried, pick something else. There is no need to keep buying something you don't enjoy out of a feeling of "loyalty." Comic book collecting should be, above all, fun. Keep looking until you find something you like to read.

Expansion

The first comic book you collect may lead you to others. Other characters with their own comics may be mentioned. You may especially like an artist or writer and want to read more of their work. This is a great way to expand your comic book collection, but be careful. Trying to collect too many comics at once can lead to mental burnout and a serious strain on your budget.

Where to Buy

Comic book stores can be a great resource for collectors. Check out the stores in your area. Ideally, your local comic book store will have a good selection, or be willing to order titles for you. The store owner can be a good person to ask about caring for your comics, finding new titles, or just discussing a storyline you enjoyed.

Caring for Your Collection

If you plan on keeping your comics as an investment, or to pass on to later generations, you need to take care of them. Your local comic book store will have bags to keep them in, as well as boards that keep the books straight.
