Collecting Movie Soundtracks

Collecting movie soundtracks proves to be an informative and rewarding hobby for many. While most people are caught up in the hot trends of today's popular music, there is a group of individuals who enjoy passing their time researching and collecting the music of movies, both new and old.

The very first soundtrack released commercially was in 1938, for Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The release set forth a whole trend of movie soundtracks to follow. Over the years, soundtracks have been released on cassette tapes, vinyl records, and compact discs. A movie soundtrack will usually contain music that is heard in the movie; however this is not always the case. Sometimes songs contained on a soundtrack are composed to capture the inspiration of a specific scene in a movie.

What can make collecting soundtracks a bit more fun is the rarity of certain releases. Many soundtrack releases of the past were quite limited, making them hard to obtain. Not only can the soundtrack be unique, but it can be valuable. Some will be quite surprised to find how much someone will pay them for a soundtrack pressed on a compact disc.

If someone is desperate to obtain a particular title, they will pay a lot for it. My recent browse through soundtracks for sale at eBay turned up with a LP soundtrack of The Girl in the Bikini, starring Brigitte Bardot, being sold for $865.00. Keep in mind that expensive soundtracks are not always the rarest soundtracks. Like most collectible items, each item is worth what one is willing to pay for it.

There are a variety of ways to find soundtracks. A visit to your local thrift store will sometimes score you some great finds. Garage sales, rummage sales, and flea markets are all good places to find soundtracks as well. Many times you can obtain hard to find titles, and make a profit reselling them to other collectors online.

A wonderful resource to find detailed information on soundtracks is the Soundtrack Collector website. You'll be able to browse through a comprehensive database of soundtrack titles, composers, track listings, and much more. You can even store your personal soundtrack collection online so that you can keep track of what titles you have. The website gives the opportunity to communicate with others who have the same interest in collecting soundtracks. For those interested in learning about what soundtracks are the most valuable, the Soundtrack Collector website is a great place to obtain information.

I love, love, love movie soundtracks! I never really considered myself a collector of them, but I guess that's certainly what I do. Great article. =)
