College? At My Age?

Aimee Dorsey

When I was 18 I made plans to attend college. I was interested in psychology, and wanted to pursue a degree. Three months before graduation I found out I was pregnant with my daughter. My thoughts were racing. Eventually I began to wonder if college was ever going to be in my future. Every New Years Eve I would tell myself this is the year I would go to college, and every year it fell through the cracks. I was always too busy working, raising my daughter, and thinking I would never have the time to go back to school. Earlier this year I went through a divorce and found myself in a new, scary position. I was now the single mother of 3 children, and was unemployed. I live in a very small community where jobs are almost impossible to find.

My car had broke down, and I found myself thinking all hope was lost. Yet at the same time, it felt like a new beginning. I could now take a breath and really figure out what I wanted to do from here. Of course finding employment, and a new vehicle where the top two things on the to do list. One night I was watching television and a commercial for the University of Phoenix came on.A crazy thought popped into my head telling me to go online and check it out. I went online and began looking at the programs they offered. I had decided to see if they had any online courses I was interested in taking. Sure enough, they did. I decided then and there that it was finally time for me to go back to school. For the last 10 years I had always found some reason, some excuse to not go back to school like I had always wanted. I finally realized, there was never going to be a perfect time to go back. So I entered my information, and requested someone call me. They next day I received a call from a man named Seth. He asked me what I wanted to study and I told him I wanted to get my associates degree in psychology. I finally made the decision to go back, and was pursuing my dream. Seth was amazing. He has helped me every step of the way and I am starting school next week.

Many people wait to pursue further education because they can never seem to find the right time. My suggestion is to just do it. Life happens, and there will never be a perfect time to go back. If you have faith, and work hard, there is nothing you can't do. I told my daughter that I was going to be going to college, and she jumped up and down and gave me a huge hug. My children are all the motivation I need. I am 28 years old, and I have waited 10 years to go to college. My mother has been a huge inspiration. She was in her 40's when she decided to go to college. It is never too late to go back to school. There is no age limit on learning.
