The College Baseball World Series is back in Omaha, Nebraska, June 18-29 but this season they are not playing in the famous Rosenblatt Stadium. The new state of the art stadium, TD Ameritrade Park will host college baseball's premiere event for the first time and this year the field of eight is wide open.
Some of the usual suspects will miss this year as well. Cal State Fullerton, a fixture in the final 8 did not make the field nor did the TCU Horned Frogs, the best team in the Mountain West Conference.
The Florida Gators and Virginia Cavaliers are co-favorites according to the Las Vegas Hilton Superbook at 4-1 odds to win but they will have their work cut out for them making it to the World Series Final. Florida's Mike Zunino is the best slugger on the team and needs to contribute in the power department for the favorites to win.
Keep an eye on the second favorite, the South Carolina Gamecocks at 7-1. They have fared well in post season play in the past and this year they have combined a perfect combination of hitting and pitching. The South Carolina Gamecocks have one of the best pitchers in the World Series, Michael Roth. Roth is near impossible to hit and it is tough to ruffle his feathers out on the mound. Vanderbilt is 8-1 and they also have a solid pitching staff that can easily land them in the finals.
There are two teams listed as 10-1 shots to win the College Baseball World Series: the North Carolina Tar Heels, Texas Longhorns. The Longhorns do not have much power but they have one of the best pitching staffs in college baseball. This series comes down to pitching and this will give the Longhorns a decisive edge.
The California Bears are 15-1 shots to win but the Golden Bears have a golden opportunity to advance. The Texas A&M Aggies odds are 20-1 and they are battle tested in the competitive Big 12 Conference. The California Bears are a long shot to win the World Series in the eyes of Las Vegas but they have a pitching staff with a combined ERA of 2.82. Watch out for the Cal Bears taking themselves all the to the finals.
