College Binge Drinking Can Lead to Alcohol Poisoning

Heading to college should be about getting an education. All too often, it turns into a reason to party all the time. That usually means a lot of binge drinking and possibly drugs. This type of binge drinking can very quickly lead to alcohol poisoning and even death. When people drink, they don't really consider it to be dangerous. In fact, the more you drink at college parties, the "cooler" you are. The reality is that binge drinking can be extremely dangerous, to the point of death in many cases. Think strongly about your decisions when it comes to frat parties and other drinking situations when you go to college. It might feel like fun right now, but the dangers are far too real.

Binge drinking in college has been occurring for many generations. One of the things that you must consider is that when you begin college, chances are, you aren't legally old enough to drink alcohol anyway. The legal drinking age in the United States is 21. That means that every time you drink alcohol until you turn 21, you are committing a crime. That isn't the biggest problem though. Drinking alcohol in any situation can lead to alcohol poisoning.

Your body can only handle so much alcohol before it starts to tell you that it doesn't want anymore. One of the signs is when you begin to vomit. If you are vomiting and you continue drinking, you are flirting with disaster. Most people will stop drinking if they get to this point, but college binge drinking is different. Continuing to drink alcohol after you have begun to vomit is actually encouraged by your college mates. The more you are able to drink, no matter the situation, the bigger "hero" you become. Vomiting is a sign that your body has been poisoned by the alcohol. Vomiting is the way that the body gets rid of the alcohol in order to keep itself safe. If you continue to drink even when you are vomiting, you are coming very close to the point of dying.

Other signs of possible alcohol poisoning are passing out, room spinning, headaches and staggering. You may think that those things are just normal when someone drinks. Though they are normal occurrences, the fact is, you are heading into the danger zone when those things occur. If you are in college and find yourself in a drinking situation, it is a good idea to have someone that can stay with your throughout the night. If you begin to vomit, many things can happen. Imagine passing out facedown and then vomiting. Your face is in the vomit and you can actually drown in it. Another scenario is if you are face up and vomit. The vomit can choke you to death. There may not even be any signs that you could be in danger. Too much alcohol in the bloodstream can kill you in and of itself.

Alcohol poisoning is a very serious health issue. When you go off to college to further your education, think about the dangers of binge drinking before you become involved in it. You can still go to parties and have fun. Think about limiting your alcohol intake while you are out there though. You may be saving your own life.
