College Football Review: Texas Vs. Baylor

I got a new tattoo tonight. If you've ever gotten one, you'll understand what I'm trying to explain. Certain parts of the body hurt more than others when getting ink. But even on those parts that don't hurt so much, once the artist has finished the initial part, he, or she, has to go back and fill things in. When they do, that part that didn't hurt earlier now makes you scream in unmitigated pain.

So too it was, watching Texas and Baylor this past Saturday. Last week, we walloped an Iowa St. team just as we should have. But when we went up against a very similar team, in Baylor, the pain was intense.

Ok, I know that was a weak analogy, but I got nothin' else.

Once again, the air raid sirens went off and the Texas Air Force took to the skies above Floyd Casey Stadium in Waco.

Speaking of FCS, why is Baylor the only team in the Big XII with a stadium that's worse than most 4 and 5A high school stadiums? Being a private institution, you'd think they'd drop a few bills on something decent. After all, the Baylor Ballpark is the envy of the Big XII baseball world. Even SMU sprung for some new digs (Ford Field), and we all know how bad their program has been.

But I digress.

Yes, we had 293 yds. passing. Yes, Colt McCoy was 25-36 and averaged almost 12 yds. per completion. And yes, we had three WRs with 50 or more yards. But Bizarro Colt also showed up and threw two picks. In all honesty, I think the QB situation is wide open this upcoming spring. I think Colt has gone, as the song from Oklahoma says, "about as fur as he c'n go".

Hey! John Chiles threw a pass! One. Whoop de friggin' doo. Get this kid in the game, Coach Brown. Because with McCoy being our second leading rusher for the second straight week, he's gonna eventually get clocked and Chiles needs to be ready.

Nate Jones is still at it. He's just one solid receiver, and we are lucky to have him. Jermichael Finley and Jordan Shipley finished behind Nate, this week. Good to see us throwing the ball Jordan's way more often. After all he has been through, he deserves his shot.

Reports out of the Forty Acres are that Vondrell McGee is sick. He has apparently caught something from Jamaal Charles. Namely, the inability to hold on to a football. Two fumbles and one lost. There goes that needle over that tattoo again. I, for one, will try and attend the off-season NCAA coaches' meetings and request that Stickum be allowed in D-1 football again. It's worth a try.

And just how bad is our running game right now? 177 total yards and our starting linebacker, Rashad Bobino had a carry. Chew on that for a while.

Our defense's performance could be classified as a "Criss Angel". Sure, it looked real enough, with us giving up only ten points. But it was all slight of hand, as the Bears' backup QBs threw four INTs. But I will give our 'D' credit for another good game against the run. BU ended up with 8 yds. rushing and an average of 0.4 per attempt.

We are now halfway through the conference schedule and I have no idea what's going to happen. The meat of our schedule starts this week, against Nebraska, although I'm not nearly as worried about the Huskers as I was a few weeks ago (thank you, Steve Pederson!). Hey, at least they're on the road, so they won't be booed by their home crowd.

But Oklahoma St., Texas Tech, and A&M won't be as forgiving. All I can do is keep my fingers crossed..... and my toes, hands, feet, arms, legs, and anything else that I can cross.

This week -

Nebraska - 16
Texas - 34

Next week, it's off to Stillwater, to see if we can make Mike Gundy blow up at another reporter.
