College Football Review - Texas Vs. Iowa State

Why am I always late with these? Probably because I have a life.... well, maybe not a life, but I have been busy. To quote Mel Brooks, "Work, work, work. Work, work, work."

No OU review. Figured we're pretty much past that point. I will say this, though. I was pleasantly surprised at our effort in this years RRS (still refusing to use the "rivalry" term). Considering we could have seen the worst spread since '03, I'll take a seven point loss to the team that will probably end up winning the Big XII.

So it's on to Iowa St.

Iowa. Land of corn. Land of..... not much else. Especially D-1 football. Gene Chizik had to be licking his chops at the thought of this game. And after our earlier performances, I would have too. But somehow, Larry Mac Duff got our defense ready and our guys put on a show like they haven't all year.

No TDs. Not one. That's the kind of 'D' we need. Granted, playing the Cyclones is a lot like playing Baylor, only with more dancing, but at this point, I'll take what I can get. I do have one suggestion for Coach Mac Duff. Just one little change. WOULD YOU PLEASE SIT OUR STARTING LBs AND PLAY THEIR BACKUPS? Why? Because right now, our LBs suck. Pure and simple. Killebrew's been benched, thanks to one too many personal fouls, Bobino's not the same guy he once was, and Scott Derry looks like that dog from the Bugs Bunny cartoons. You know, the one that keeps running into the tree time and time again, because he has no sense of direction. It's called Kindle, Norton, and Houston, coach. Look into it.

Good news from the secondary. 135 yds. passing and 7.1 per completion. I would love to see those numbers when we play TTU later this year (don't get me wrong, I know I won't, just sayin').

Fumbles: Texas - None.

Yep, that's right. Zip. Zilch. Nada. Zero. Goose egg. And that's including Jamaal Charles, believe it or not. I'm still of the mindset that JC needs to have a timeout and think about how he cost us the OU game and how he has been giving us heart attacks all year, but considering we pretty much abandoned the running game (he had 7 carries for 44 yds.) on Saturday, he gets a pass for now. John Chiles ended up our leading rusher, with 58 yds. Even Colt had more (55 yds.) than JC.

Colt looked like Graham Harrell out there. He finished the day 23-29, for 298 yds., 4 TDs, and more importantly, no INTs. I'm still hoping for a rapid advancement, regarding John Chiles, as Colt's arm just isn't strong enough to give us the deep ball that this offense needs. His pass to Jordan Shipley to open the game was proof positive. While Shipley caught the ball and scored, he had to wait on it, and against a better defense, that one could be a pick.

Who is Mike Jones? Screw that. Who is Nate Jones? Is this kid on, or what? 125 yds. on the day and a TD to go with it. Sad that this kid has had to ride the pine for three years, before getting his shot. He has the potential to make losing Limas a bit easier to take.

Speaking of Limas, the surgery was a success and he should be ready for the Combine. I wish nothing but the best to him and, in all honesty, I think his draft position won't drop too much. He won't be a top fifteen, as many had predicted, but he will be a first-rounder.

And a shout out to our O-line. Colt was sacked once. After all the problems we've had up front, it was nice to see McCoy not staggering around. He should get the same protection this week.

So now on to Waco. Waco. Land of many bibles. Land of dancing on campus (yep, they allow it now). Land of Guy Morriss, for at least the rest of this season. Baylor should be a 'W' for us. And an easy one, at that.

We have been relegated to the dregs this week, however. Look for the 'Horns at 11:30am, on Versus (check your local listings), or the Baylor Football Network. I say that, because this is the third game they've played on there, so far.

Next week, the Cornhuskers come to town. Nebraska is a program in turmoil right now, and they have turned to Tom Osborne to try and right the sinking ship. I wouldn't bet on seeing Bill Callahan on the sidelines at Memorial Stadium next year.

This week:

Texas - 48
Baylor - 13
