College Football Special: One Ounce Blunts + Gun Charges = One Game Suspensions

This just in from ESPN.com…

"Texas cornerback Tarell Brown and backup linebacker Tyrell Gatewood, who were suspended for the No. 8 Longhorns' loss to No. 1 Ohio State, have been reinstated for Saturday's game against Rice, Texas coach Mack Brown said Monday.

Misdemeanor marijuana charges against Brown and Gatewood were dropped on Friday, but a weapons possession charge against Brown is still in effect. The pair were suspended after they were arrested with former Texas linebacker Aaron Harris early the morning of Monday, Sept. 4.

Brown's attorney, Jamie Balagia, said Harris, who was also charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession, told authorities the marijuana was his. Balagia also said both Brown and Gatewood tested negative on a drug screening for cocaine and marijuana administered by the university.

The loss of Brown, a senior and Texas' top cover corner, was keenly felt in the Longhorns' 24-7 loss to Ohio State. Brown had been expected to draw the assignment of covering Buckeye wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr., one of Ohio State's top playmakers, and Ginn had 5 catches for 97 yards and a touchdown in the Buckeyes' win."

I can't really sit here and listen to all this analysis concerning Mack Brown and the "great" job he did by suspending his star cornerback Tarell Brown for one game. Sure, it was one BIG game; so big that it might have cost Texas a shot at defending it's national championship, but it's not like he had a choice. He had to suspend Brown. If Brown had not been a superstar collegiate athlete, he'd probably still be in jail (shit, he might be dead). It wasn't like they caught him with a little bit of pot and a measly weapon. They nabbed him with a one-ounce blunt- I can't even fathom how something like that was even rolled, let alone smoked. And this was not a pellet gun either. For all we know, Tarell Brown is actually an assassin with thirteen kills on his resume.

(On a completely unrelated side note, I have to point something out before I forget it. When doing research for this story I looked up Terrell Brown [spelling] on a search engine and found perhaps the best website I've ever seen… terrellbrown.com. This is a website featuring a white guy with a hot pink background. I can't do it justice, please check it out. I love when the internet turns up a gems like this.)

Anyway, as I was saying, Mack Brown had no choice but to suspend his illegitimate son Tarell and his friend Tyrell Gatewood (not a starter, so nobody cares). I bet it killed him to do it too. "Hmmm, let Ted Ginn rip us apart or tarnish my legacy forever?" If Texas had lost to USC in last year's Rose Bowl, I guarantee you Mack Brown doesn't suspend those players. The difference between a national championship coach and a coach who can't win the big game but is consistently on the national stage is like the difference between Paris Hilton in House of Wax and Halle Berry in Monster's Ball.

Let's get back to that one-ounce blunt. Is this cool or just a blatant waste of weed? I guess being able to say you smoked a one-ounce blunt isn't something you can really put a price tag on.

And one final point…

What the hell is wrong with the bookmakers these days? Did you see what happened to the line AFTER it was announced that Tarell Brown wasn't going to play? It went up, in favor of Texas! I mean, did Vegas think that the loss of their best defensive player because of the fallout of a weed and gun charge would somehow motivate the Texas squad? Give me a break. That line was more fallible than the New Orleans levy. Somebody got rich off that crap.
