College Football's Most Overlooked Wide Receivers for 2010
While Largely Disregarded by the National Media, These Players Possess Both NFL Size and Skills
DeAndre Brown - Southern Miss
A standout receiver in high school, Brown was rated as a five star prospect by almost all of the major recruiting services. He was highly sought after by major programs like Florida and Ole Miss, however he decided to forgo the lights and crowds of the SEC for the University of Southern Mississippi. Brown, who stands at an impressive 6'6", suffered a horrific leg injury against Troy at the end of his 1,117 yard freshman season. The break was so severe that many wondered if he would ever be able to play again. Thankfully, Brown was able to make it back onto the football field in 2010 and follow up his stellar freshman year with a respectable 785 yard performance. His size alone would get him attention from NFL scouts, but when you pair that with his rare receiving abilities, you have a player worth mentioning with the best in college football.
T.Y. Hilton - Florida International University
Unlike DeAndre Brown, T.Y. Hilton was not a highly touted national prospect during his prep years. He was quick to make a name for himself at FIU however, beginning his collegiate career with a punt return for a touchdown against Iowa. He was recognized by numerous national publications as a top kick and punt returner, and also lead the team in receiving with just over 1,000 yards. While he was forced to battle through injuries during his sophomore season, look for him to put up some serious numbers on offense and special teams this coming year.
Tandon Doss - Indiana University
Doss had a breakout sophomore year with 77 catches for 962 yards and 5 touchdowns. While these numbers aren't mind-blowing, it should be noted that he had his biggest games against some of the Hoosiers toughest opponents. Doss possesses both NFL skills and size (6'3" and 200 lbs), and like T.Y. Hilton, he is notorious for his ability in the return game. Look for him to add to his already impressive football resume in 2010.
Jake Soy - Northwest Missouri State
While Jake Soy may never step foot on a professional football field, I feel that his name has to be mentioned in this list strictly based on his ridiculous collegiate numbers. It can be argued that his stats are irrelevant due to the competition (NW Missouri State is a Divison II school), but a 1,559 yard season with 27 touchdowns is hard to ignore. Considering the starting tailback for his team ran for over 1,800 yards and 22 touchdowns, one has to wonder how these guys aren't attracting more national attention.
