- Use more than one search engine
If you are the Yahoo! girl/guy or a Google person and you never use any other search engines because you just don't trust them, this year is the year to get rid of those beliefs. When you're doing research online it's best to use more than one search engine when attempting to find any sort of information.
- Type in different keywords and phrases
If you've ever typed in a keyword or a phrase into a search engine and you've gotten no good results, when you're in college you're going to have to try many different words and sentences to find what you're looking for. If you're just typing in one word and hoping to find a lot of details on that subject, try typing in a more detailed phrase as opposed to one keyword; this is sure to give you better results.
- Try an online encyclopedia
Online encyclopedia's such as MSN's Encarta and Wikipedia are great resources when you're doing research for a college assignment online. These encyclopedia's are updated on a daily basis and if you don't find exactly what you're looking for there, you are sure to get pointed in the right direction. Most encyclopedia articles provide the reader with external links to more information on that topic.
- Use forums
Forums are like chat rooms; in the forums you will be able to talk directly with other internet users to ask them questions and to discuss or answer questions yourself. Forums are great ways to find what you're looking for online if you've tried every other resource. If you look for a forum with the topic that you're researching then you should definitely post what you're looking for and then hope and wait for someone to answer; the chances of getting a good answer are very good and you can expect that the person who responds means well.
- Have a partner
If you are to work alone on your project or research paper then go ahead and try to find everything that you need on your own. When doing research though it's best to work with someone else; preferably someone with more experience doing online research than you. If you do not know anyone like that, ask around in your class or post a "Wanted" ad around your campus or in school social networking sites to find someone that you can pay to work with you.
