College at Mid-Age

Starting College Tomorrow

Catdog
30 years young, tomorrow's the big day
"I am so nervous," repeatedly I say
Like anyone's first day of school
The emotions never change, who knew?

Sending myself into a panic attack
Wondering ill judgment I did lack
Always the smartest in my class
All I learned wiped away by years passed

Starting to shake with anxiety
Tomorrow I rejoin society
Hopefully not the oldest in class
No matter, as long as I pass
Tomorrow hurry and get here
So I can be freed of this fear!

My clothes laid upon the bed
A million things run through m y head
"What if," ponders my mind quite a bit
A klutz of nature, quite legit
I know I will do something wrong
Since I've been, way too long

Everyone says, "You'll do fine."
That doesn't calm these nerves of mine
Worrying about every little thing
Heart pounds, head does ring

Waited so long for this day
Now wishing it further away

Like a child on Christmas Eve
An ounce of sleep I'll get tonight
As these thoughts won't leave
Until the morning light

Then I have many chores to do
Until it is time to go to school
Studied my books for a month now
Sure to be the class clown
I know all I have learned will leave me
That's just how I work, my history

Tomorrow I become a college student
Hooray for me I tell myself
An education is quite prudent
Investing my future and wealth
However not changing my mood
Emotions that have brewed
Are out of my control
Remembering my goal

Tomorrow is the big day
Of starting a new pattern of life
Improving my pay
And weakening my past's strife
I am a college student now
A future in with I can be proud!

Happy Birthday to you catdog. And congrats on furthering you education. How well I remember going back to college at age 45 and thinking I would be so dumb and out of place, but alas I was wrong, it was a wondrous experience and I was maybe smarter than all those high school kids as I had life experiences to go with the learning. You will do fantastic at anything you try. Just remember to believe in yourself.

Congratulations for making the choice to further your education, that is never a bad thing, at any age. Nice job on the poem as well. I will not say good luck at school, instead I will say enjoy!

Been there, done that!! From one 'non-traditional' student to another, the education you will receive will be far richer than those 10 yrs younger. You know what that degree means and pursuing it at any stage in life is admirable! Congrats!

Well I survived my first class with the most fun a person could have! I loved my instructor, the small school setting, the open communication that we had and respect that was given. Most of all, everyone was of all ages, but not too many straight from high school. And to top it all off, I didn't forget all the business I took.

This will be a great experience for you! When I was in college at the usual college age, I had two 'mature' friends. They were well-admired! They were very confident about why they were there and what they wanted to do. Many of rest of us were far less so.
