After reading this article, even the busiest student will have no excuse to bypass the smallest networking opportunity.
Academic and Specialty Advisors
Even before taking that special journey to college, the first university encounters are with advisors. Students need advisors to help with academic planning, financial aid, and choosing a concentration or major. College students should remember to stay in contact with these departments and create lasting impressions as well as standing relationships with their advisors. This way, each advisor in their respective field knows them by name and is familiar with their situation. Creating connections throughout the college years can simply include, stopping by on a lunch break, calling, or emailing (remembering to use correct email etiquette) once a month to touch basis with them. This keeps that student's name and background in the forefront of their minds as far as any potential opportunities are concerned.
Academic Organizations
Joining an academic organization can be as simple as attending one meeting a week or even a month. These organizations are overflowing with networking opportunities. Academic organizations continuously keep students informed of upcoming career events, workshops, hiring opportunities, and career fairs. Often times, academic organizations are affiliated with corporations or larger organizations for employment purposes or club affairs. Becoming familiar with an organization's executive board and its members is also a very lucrative step in networking. These members are usually the liaisons between each organization participant and an affiliated corporation or organization. Connecting with these individuals can lead to opportunities of involvement with these larger associations.
Social Organizations
Social organizations include fraternities and sororities, as well as organizations catering to hobbies. Fraternities and sororities are extremely worthwhile when it comes to networking. In a lot of cases, these organizations are nationally linked, creating connections nationwide and even world-wide. Becoming a part of fraternities and sororities often gets a student a phone call away from landing a prospective opportunity.
Social organizations also lead to exclusive knowledge and involvement with college or university events. These events range from large corporation sponsored workshops to national conventions attended by company big shots and corporate tycoons. It's up to each student to take advantage of these opportunities as they present themselves.
Classes
No time to join an organization...too bad that's not an excuse either. As a condition of attending a college or university fortunately, students must attend classes. Professors and classmates are perfect for easy networking. Students should get to know one another throughout the semester, as well as build relationships with their professors. Other students are often involved in different organizations and may reveal a variety of resources to one another. Great resources are also juniors and seniors who have already established connections through several companies and outlets; it's just a matter of tapping into their address books. Professors and teacher's assistants or graduate instructors are affiliated with exclusive board organizations that are informed of the newest internships, fellowships, and job opportunities.
College students can make connections in the most convenient places and times for their schedule. Create lasting impressions making every networking opportunity count. It is vital that a student use these opportunities to enhance their resume, making them a favorable candidate. The key is taking advantage of prospective opportunities and effectively using that time to produce optimal results.
