College Park, Georgia to Host Second Annual Mayor's Ball

Annette Robbins
The historic city of College Park, Georgia is abuzz with excitement as it prepares for its second annual Mayor's Ball to be held August 18th, at the Georgia International Convention Center. The Honorable Mayor Jack Longino, an affable and down to earth individual, along with his wife, citizens and business partners of College Park will host the black tie event. Last year, the event attracted more than 1000 attendees. Ladies dressed in their long formal dresses accompanied by gentlemen togged in their best tuxedos enjoyed an evening of dining, dancing and good fellowship.

Unlike other social events of its kind in other communities, the Mayor's Ball is open to the common and not so common citizens. No stuffy, snobbish aristocratic protocol at this event. Both the well heeled and ordinary citizen rub shoulders at this Mayor's Ball. In fact the price for the ball is very affordable and at $35 per person, it has to be one of the most reasonably priced events of its kind in the state. This year, as last year, various community organizations will be vying for proceeds from this event. The four charities that were honored last year were the College Park Historical Society, the College Park Community Coalition, Tapestry Youth Ministries and South Fulton Senior Services. One feels he is doing his civic duty when purchasing a ticket, knowing that the proceeds will help fund worthwhile social causes that will benefit the citizens of College Park. The Ball Committee has announced that this year's proceeds will again benefit local charities and those organizations interested in competing for funds have applied and will be announced the evening of the Ball.

My husband and I, along with several other residents of our senior residence attended the event last year and what a delightful time we shared. Some of the more spirited members of our group ventured out onto the dance floor, keeping in lively step with the music provided by the versatile Statesboro Blues Band from Statesboro, Georgia. The band did a rousing rendition of Rolling, Rolling on the River and Mustang Sally which brought down the house! Their music is a blend of Motown and rock and roll. Dinner was provided, and though some felt the portions were rather small, it was tasty and eye appealing. The Mayor's Ball was held in September last year during the Georgia gubernatorial race. The politicians were out in full force and although the Democratic candidate for governor with whom we had a group "photo op" lost miserably, a year later it is only a distant memory.

We have resolved to attend the Mayor's Ball yearly. So, fellow citizens, if you are looking for a pleasant night out we encourage you to join us for the gala festivities on August 18th. I can hardly wait to put on my designer gown and see my husband dressed in his tuxedo and head out for a evening of enjoyment. Hurry if you plan to attend because ticket sales end soon. Tickets can be purchased on line at www.cpmayorsball.org or at the following local businesses: Barbecue Kitchen, Lunch on Main Street, State Farm, Tonya Roberts Salon, Trophy Trends and Wally Park. Additional information is available by calling 404-761-0266. See you at the Ball!
