College Preparation: What Books to Buy

Virginia Gaces
The question of whether to buy books for college is one of the dilemmas that freshmen students encounter. This is because of the financial constraints that students may have and also because of the existing economic status of almost all countries in the world; everyone is scrimping and saving.

The purchase of a particular book; however, would be dependent on several factors. The following are guides in deciding whether to buy a book or not.

1.

Be aware of how much you have allotted to this particular expenditure before you could decide on any purchase.

2.

If it is a requirement for the course, then it should be on the top of your list. These are the books that have would have to buy first. You would not want to be marked incomplete because of this reason.

3.

Next on your list are the reference books that are not available in your school library. You have to buy these books as you would not be able to do your assignments, unless you borrowed from your classmate, which in most likelihood would not be possible as he would be researching his assignment too.

4.

If you still have available funds, then you can buy the reference books for the major subjects. This would benefit you a lot because you would be able to research and read more anytime during the day.

5.

After the above mentioned priorities are bought and you still have money, then by all means, buy all reference books even for the minor subjects.

6.

If your allotted budget is not sufficient though, you can always go to the library to research on your minor subjects.

Always remember the cliché': "If there's a will, there's a way." There is nothing impossible for a determined student. The lack of books should not deter you in achieving your goal and make you belong to the cream of the crop. There are lots of successful people who had less financially but this did not stop them to achieve success in their education.

Make do with whatever books you could purchase. You can augment the insufficiency by borrowing from the library, taking down notes, borrowing from a friend. A resourceful student will always find way and means to learn!
