College Students: Resume-Writing Help

Reba M
Preparing a resume can be a highly overwhelming and difficult process for most college students. A student's resume is a very important part of any students job or internship hunt. It is more important what experience and honors a student has to list on his or her resume. But if a prospective employer does not read a person's resume, he or she will never know what the student has accomplished. There are many guidelines a student can follow and there are many resources on college campus to assist students in writing their resume.

The guidelines for students working on their resumes are quite simple. First, it is most important to consider the audience to whom a person is sending their resume. This means if a student is an engineering major it would be odd and not well received if their resume included samples of artwork and bright colors. Similarly it would also not be received by prospective employers if a graphic design major had a very simple black and white resume with very organized simple bullets. Secondly, it is important that the student includes an objective statement on the resume. Most people do not know what to write for this part of the resume but it is extremely important. Thirdly, although it might not seem as important as people make it out to be it is highly important that a student keeps their resume down to one page. Employers rarely ever look at the second page of a resume and so it is important to get all of the most important information on the first page of the resume. Next, it is common practice to only include educational information for universities and colleges from which a student has received or will be receiving a degree or certificate from. There are many other less significant guidelines that students should follow when putting together their resume and these can be found in many different resources.

There are also numerous resources on college campuses to help students with their resumes and other career assistance services available. In most career services offices they have resources to help students decide what they want to do as careers, find internships, and job opportunities. They also can help students with resumes and job interview skills. Many colleges and universities also have online resume builder tools that are available to students. Proof reading services on campus can also help students by helping them be sure that their resumes are error free. Finally, students should have many people look over and make corrections to their resumes. This will lend insight to the student about what other people think and see when looking at the students resume.
