College Textbooks Half Price or Less

Beverly Bright
Finding affordable college textbooks, new and used, just got a little bit easier, and cheaper. Colleges and universities are now required to list required course books and materials, including retail prices and ISBN numbers on their online course schedules because of a new law that went into effect in July 2010.

Competition for college books sales is fierce. With college bookstores and online suppliers competing for business, more options are available. New and used books are always available, but some books are available to rent for a semester, with a predetermined return date. Sometimes return shipping fees are waived.

Local College Bookstore

By researching the prices at the local college bookstore, a basis for price is established for comparing with other sources online. Many U.S. campus bookstores, owned by Barnes & Noble, lets students choose new, used, rental, or digital versions of many textbooks. E-books can be combined with lecture notes, syllabi, slides, and images to read on a PC or MAC, using a free software application from Barnes & Noble called NOOKstudy.

Comparison Sites

Web sites offer many different deals on college textbooks. Some sites offer to purchase the books back or help sell books to the retailer or another retailer at the end of the semester. Some sites to compare prices are:

Campus Books
Big Words
All Book Stores
Amazon
Half
Abe Books
Barnes & Noble

Be sure to verify shipping prices, shipping dates, and return policies and prices should the class be dropped before the end of the semester. Also, use the book's ISBN number to guarantee ordering the correct book. Campus Books, Big Words, and All Book Stores list the textbook, seller, price, and shipping costs. The order is directed to the seller's site for shipping.

Rentals

Rental textbooks are available. The site of Campus Book Rentals has some of the lowest rental prices. Chegg has rentals and both sites provide free rental-return shipping.

E-books

Abe Books had the cheapest e-book prices. A feature by Test Bank, which has downloadable practice questions, is offered with some E-book purchases.

With a little research, savings on college textbooks can be substantial.
