College Tips for 2007: Is the Semester Beginning Already?

Erica Dallas
The New Year has arrived and students will be preparing to go back to college after an extended, well rested Christmas break. Adjusting to the change can be difficult for many students, especially those who have become homesick or used to living a certain way around their families. The holidays makes everyone a little chaotic and for students, making the transition from a nice long break to beginning a new semester can give anyone a headache. Depending upon your major, certain students will be thrust head first into doing lots of work, thereby leaving no time to take a deep breath. This article can help you prioritize and figure out how to have a stress free semester.

1. Make a list of the different materials needed to go back to school. If you are staying in a dorm, then you will definitely have to buy all of the items that you normally need to live such as groceries, toiletries and house cleaning materials.

2. Buy your books at least two weeks before you begin school. Most colleges have bookstores that sell overpriced textbooks. However, you can remedy this by first finding out which books are needed for your assigned classes and going online and looking for the same books at a lower price. The ISBN number on the back of the book is all that is needed but if you know the author or title, you can also find the book easier. Make certain to find the right edition and read customer reviews from whichever testbook site you are buying your books.

3. Purchase your school supplies and other items in bulk. This saves time and money I assure you. Pens, pencils, paper, and ink cartridges for your computer are the basic school tools and buying in bulk will help you focus on other things than expenses this semester.

4. Find out your school's semester schedule because there are always lots of great events going on throughout the year. The beginning and end of a semester always has some of the best events for college students to take advantage of free food and other give-a-ways.

5. Make certain that all of your finances are in order before going to school this semester. Many students find themselves in frustrated moods at the administration office on the first day of school because of financial woes. Mistakes can be made, but have the wisdom to check all of the details regarding your tuition ahead of time to avoid mishap.

6. Get involved in organizations around campus if you have not already. Support groups are wonderful especially when you need motivation to do something as simple as go to class. Sometimes it takes looking at another student's success to get yourself straightened out. You all can help one another in not only academic matters, but social issues as well.

7.Get to know your professors. I know, I know - this sounds a little far-fetched, but some professors can be pretty cool. Additionally, if they notice that you are a student who really tries, you could definitely be considered for a recommendation later on in life.

2007 is a new year and make sure that your resolutions include less procrastination, more socializing, more organization, less doubt, and lots of living! Let your school year begin with organization and you will be sure to have one without lots of stress and debt.
