College Trends: Online Poker

Online Poker is Changing Lives of College Students

William DuBose
There is a new trend arising on college campuses and it is ruining many lives, while making some much, much better. Online gambling, specifically online poker, is the new craze for college students who have way too much time on their hands and a little bit of extra cash in their pockets. It starts in the usual way, with kids wagering a twenty dollar bill here and twenty there. There are tons of online poker sites that are out there and are willing to take that money and turn it into some virtual poker chips that buy students into tables connected across the world.

When students begin playing online poker, it seems easy and harmless. What is twenty dollars, after all? With the rising cost of gas prices, that is less than half of a tank of gas. Students begin playing and the game becomes easy and most of all, fun. Poker, though, is a highly addictive game driven by the competitive will to succeed that is instilled in most red-blooded college students. For every dollar that is won playing online poker, a dollar must be lost, though. Some college students are the unfortunate souls on the downside of that losing trend.

When students get drawn in, gambling companies make it hard to get out. They offer special bonuses aimed directly at people who need to reload their accounts. These offers, especially some up to fifty percent, are extremely hard to resist. This is causing some heartbreak for college folks and some extreme concern from their parents. When the kids can not pay the burden of their debts, the money is thrown onto the parents, who are not happy about having to foot the bill. The results, as you can see, are catastrophic.

Online poker is ruining lives. College students are now spending more time playing online than they are studying or spending time with their friends. The drive to win and the temptation of the promise of easy money is much too much for many of them to bear. With this thing having such an adverse impact on grades and social lives, you would think that students would wise up and realize the snake that they are playing with. For students, it is not that easy though. The chains of addiction are hard to break and are much more difficult to relinquish than these students had ever imagined.

It is hard to blame the companies for marketing their product to young adults, though. We have the money and we have the desire to play the games. After all, we are the perfect candidate. It is up to the students to lay down the poker and set limits when things go wrong. If they do not, the results could be worse than anyone ever imagined.

college students do lose money online but others gain huge sums of money. I know some people who have used online poker winnings to pay for their entire college tuition. However, there are others who lose their tuition money which is quite sad
