College World Series 2010: Las Vegas Odds to Win & Picks
College Baseball's Best Teams Combine Offense and Pitching
The college baseball NCAA Super Regionals will be announced at the end of the month, giving us a better idea of each teams path to Omaha and Rosenblatt Stadium, for the final 12 days of the College World Series. Even though the match ups are not announced for the NCAA Super Regionals, this is the best time to get some early money on some high priced teams.
When looking for teams to make a play on early, consider the following attributes and in this order: pitching, offensive production and coaching. A college baseball team that enters the NCAA College World Series with hot pitching, is much like an NHL team in the Stanley Cup Playoffs with a hot goalie. Pitching is the number one key for a team to advance to the final week at Rosenblatt Stadium.
Hitting cannot be discounted when evaluating teams headed into the NCAA College World Series either. The team that has power and can overcome strong pitchers will also advance deep into the World Series. A steady team that gets hot at the plate can overcome long odds and may be worthy of an additional bet after the NCAA College World Series begins.
Coastal Carolina may become a household name in the NCAA College World Series.
Not many people have heard of Coastal Carolina but the team has become a tough opponent for those that have dared to play them this season. Coastal Carolina has a two strong pitchers as starters. Anthony Meo is 11-1 with a 1.78 ERA and opponents are only hitting .219 against him while Cody Wheeler is not as dominant with a 3.56 ERA but he just doesn't lose, he is currently 10-0. Coastal Carolina also has a solid bullpen led by stopper Austin Fleet.
At the plate, Coastal Carolina has catcher Jose Iglesias who is also great behind the plate. Iglesias leads the team in home runs and slugging percentage and will be a key player in Coastal Carolina's run for a College World Series title. At 25-1, Coastal Carolina's combination of hitting and pitching makes them the best bet to win the 2010 NCAA College World Series
Cal State Fullerton is always a team to consider in the NCAA College World Series.
The Cal State Fullerton Titans are one of the most feared teams in college baseball. They know how to hang around and pull out wins with hard nosed play and they have never been afraid to take one for the team. The numbers will not point to Cal State Fullerton being a threat in the 2010 NCAA College World Series but they have intangibles that make them a formidable opponent early in the going.
Cal State Fullerton's two best pitchers, Noe Ramirez and Daniel Renken are both hittable but they know how to manage their games and win. Stopper Nick Ramirez has post season experience and will be a stable force on the Cal State Fullerton staff. At the plate Cal State Fullerton hitters are tenacious and not afraid take a pitch in the rib cage for the team. Their best hitter Gary Brown is hitting over .400 and has an on base percentage approaching .500. Cal State Fullerton at 20-1, is a solid second choice to win the 2010 NCAA College World Series.
TCU Horned Frogs and Jim Schlossnagel have three pitchers to choose from.
Pitching in College baseball is normally old school. Two solid starters and an assemblage of spot starters. What Coach Jim Schossnagel has done with his TCU Horned Frogs team, is use three starters over the season. This could be huge heading into the demanding post season schedule.
TCU's pitching staff is led by Matt Purke who is 10-0. Purke was ranked as the third best prospect coming out of high school by Baseball America. TCU also has Steven Maxwell and Kyle Winkler who both only have one defeat. With this three headed monster, TCU has worked their way past teams such as Cal State Fullerton but they have struggled against the Big 12 this season.
Matt Curry supplies the power on this team with 16 home runs and is a solid clutch hitter with two outs. Curry is not the only player hitting on this as they boast an average over .340 and and a slugging percentage hovering near .600. TCU at 25-1, is the third best choice to win the 2010 NCAA College World Series.
