We know that taking aspirin can help with a variety of things, but now a new study say's it can also cut Colon Cancer by 60%. Studies in observations, have told researchers that aspirin can lower the risk of colon cancer. But this was the first randomized trial to observe the effect.

Researchers from the University's of Newcastle and Leeds, in England kept tabs on about one thousand people from around the world, from forty-three Medical Centers in sixteen countries. All of them had Lynch syndrome, which is a genetic condition towards development of cancers.

They were divide into two groups. One was given instructions to take two aspirins everyday for at least two years, and the other group were given placebo. After the two year trial, the people who took the aspirins everyday had a 63% reduced risk of developing colon cancer, while the women in the group also had a reduced risk of womb cancer as well.

John Burns, lead researcher said "We have clear proof that aspirin prevents cancer in people with a high genetic risk." The researchers aren't sure just how the aspirin works, but they believe the active ingredient in the aspirin causes the DNA-damaged cells to die.

There are many benefits to taking aspirin. People need to weight the pro's and con's, while too much aspirin can cause ulcers and vascular bleeding. There is also evidence that long term aspirin use can modestly reduce the risk in people who don't have Lynch Syndrome.

Check with your Dr before starting any long-term aspirin use. There are other ways to help keep colon cancer at bay. The researchers advise anybody aged fifty and older to be checked, so that precancerous polyps can be removed before they turn into cancer. Watching your weight, eating less red meat and not smoking also helps.
