Color Blocking with Clothes Made Simple

Amanda Furbeck
Color blocking is becoming quite a popular trend. I see it in the malls. I see it on the streets. And I see it splashed across the pages of all my fav fashion mags. I would love to mix such bold, bright hues together for my own wardrobe, but it seems pretty extreme compared to my simple black and grey clothing rut. So I started studying the looks of those color blocking fashions, and here's what I found.

Try accessories first. If you're nervous about adding color to your wardrobe like I am, start by adding a few bright accessories. A purse or tote bag is the best way to add a pop of color to any outfit. Choose a color that contrasts with your outfit so you can get used to the idea.

Start adding one color at a time. Going from all black and grey to brightly colored looks is such an extreme move. It's enough for me to test out one new color of clothing at a time. Most bright colors look pretty good against black. Or pair a bright with another neutral, such as cream or grey.

Go for solids. Solid colors are the best way to dabble in color blocking. This way the focus can be on the contrast, and not on all the details. Choose a blouse in one color and a pair of pants in another. Neon and bright colors work best, but you can mix and match any color scheme.

All in the family. To keep the look cohesive, choose colors that are all in the family. Choose two neon colors to wear together, such as orange and hot pink. Or choose two blue based colors, such as green and purple. Or stick to cool or warm colors. Mixing a cool color with a warm color is pretty extreme. Done well, you look urban and edgy. If it's not done well, it's its just a 'don't.'

Use the colorwheel. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:RGV_color_wheel_1908.png ). If you want to make sure your colors go together, then use the color wheel. Purple and gold are directly across from each other on the color wheel. So purple and gold make a great, edgy, color blocking combo. However, orange and yellow are right next to each other on the color wheel, making for a slightly more subtle contrast.

When in doubt, keep it simple. Give color blocking a try, and keep it simple to start with an accessory or clothing item. Add a great new piece here and there until you have the wardrobe that you really want.
