Color Coordinating Your Linens

Rita Jan
How the linens are displayed in your home marks the quality of the homemaker. Color coordinating, arranging and keeping your linens, whether they are bedroom, kitchen or bathroom linens, can make quite the impression upon any guest.

The theme of your home. Many home keepers have the strong desire to match their rooms, their blankets, their bedspreads and their linens together. This is a sad mistake which can cause an "over-themed" room design. The key to keeping things in perspective is to keep blankets and bedspreads in a neutral sub-color, and have the linens match the rooms. If you have a strong western theme in your home, white, brown and caramel-colored bathrooms are fitting. If your favorite color is blue, then keep the bedspreads and table linens white and have blue towels and sheets. The key is to have massive color displays, such as can be found on beds and tables, in the neutral sub-color and to accent in the design color.

The color palettes. There are many different color palettes to choose from. Brown, caramel, and red give a strong western or southwestern theme, while dark brown and white can make a pleasing contrasting theme. Golds, yellows, caramels and browns combine for a very warm generic color theme. In the cooler scale, a light blue and white combination is refreshing and even keeps a room cooler temperature-wise. Blues, purples and light greens make up a modern flair for a child's room or a breakfast nook. Contrasting colors, such as blue and orange or red and green, can be exciting but they can also be almost blinding if overdone.

Making sets of linens match. Unless your bathrooms are naturally widely different in theme, you will want to keep your bathroom linens in a nice uniform color palette. This uniformity is what will smooth out all of the little differences and discrepancies within the style and make of your home.

As for your kitchen, it is alright to have a different set of towels for this room. However, make sure that your kitchen towels, dish cloths and table napkins remain the same color so as to connect everything which is dining and food related and to reduce the look of clutter.

In your bedrooms, match sheet sets together. Some people like to keep certain sheets to go in certain rooms, but we are looking to make this more tasteful and easier on you, not more complex. Choose a sheet theme to cover all of your bedrooms, and stick to the color palette no matter what. Donate any sheets outside of this color theme, for this will keep your home looking like it was decorated and designed on purpose, rather than sporadically.

Color coordinating your linens may seem to be unimportant, but it is precisely this coordination which makes every room in your house so pleasing to the eyes. Just as with mismatched dishes, differences between themes can be distracting and seem busy to the eye. Keeping everything uniform, at least within a theme of colors, will help to keep your home looking beautiful and well-kept.
