Color Your Hair for a Dollar or Even Free; Dollar Store Box Dye and Other Fun Remedies

Are you itching to color your hair, but short on money? No need to worry there are ways you can color your hair for a dollar or even free. Being a professional beautician, I'm not suppose to tell you to buy hair dye for a buck, but I'm honest and love to see people save money and use the rest on their kids/family.

Have you ever been to a Dollar store, Dollar Tree, 99 Cent Store, or Family Dollar store and saw boxes of hair color in the beauty aisle? Yes, they do exist, and for some people the color works extremely well, especially the black.

Some people get very skeptical when it comes to buying cheap hair dye. However, most of the colors in the boxes are all made using almost the same ingredients. The only difference between $1 dollar color and $5 dollar color is the name brand. Box hair dye may not carry all the nutrients the hair needs, but you can add your own nurturing products to them such as conditioning treatments, and even stronger peroxide.

Did you know you can add a stronger volume peroxide to a box color? Open up the bottle of peroxide in the box, and add 1/2 ounce to an ounce of peroxide cream from Sally's. Shake it well, and place onto the hair. Allow the color to process for 20-40 minutes. If your using a dark color like black, only leave on for 25 minutes. To achieve better results place a processing cap on your head after you apply, and hold a blowdryer up to your head for the first ten minutes.

Another option that is cheap is Kool-Aid, or food coloring dye. Between the two options I love the lemonade Kool-Aid for removing chlorine in your hair, which can be read here or mixing blue and red food coloring to get a wild purple tone or a blue and green to get a funky teal shade, which are both extremely hot right now.

The only problem using a product like Kool Aid or food coloring is the timing. How long can you leave the color on? If your using the Kool Aid you can leave that on your head anywhere from 5 hours to overnight. Just remember though, if you go to sleep with the product still on, place a cap over your head plus a hand towel, and also protect your pillows and blankets.

Food coloring I would only leave on 3-6 hours. No need to sleep with it on. This product is stronger than Kool Aid. Next time you enter a Dollar Store, pick a box up and give it a try.

I've always been afraid to try the dollar store stuff, but now maybe I will. Thanks!

Great article! Thanks for laying my dollar store hair dye fears to rest. Now I can dye my locks for much cheaper without worrying about my hair falling out!
