Color Schemes for Your Home

It will amaze you how just by simply adding color to a room can make the room so much better. If you have white walls try adding a splash of color to brighten up the room, and enhance the overall atmosphere of the room. The color you choose will depend on your individual taste, but there are some colors that are guaranteed to go well together. There are also colors that will fit well with particular rooms, and make that room more inviting, for you, your family, and guests who will visit your home.

Bathrooms and bedrooms are places in the home where you would most probably like to relax, therefore you should choose calming colors for these rooms. Light blue, light green, and pastel shades of purple are all good colors that will enhance the ability to relax in these rooms. More vibrant colors are acceptable in rooms such as the dining room, or living room. These rooms may be used for entertainment purposes, and require some bright colors to set the mood for get together's with the family, or small parties. Red and orange, mixed with light or dark browns are a good color combination for these rooms. Brown gives the earthy feeling to the room, while red and orange gives a more vibrant feel, a mixture of these colors can prove to be the ideal solution to providing a bright, but subtle image to these rooms.

Smaller rooms always look bigger when a light color is used on the walls. Try using a light beige with a border of white, or creamy colored paint. This will give the room a bright, refreshing look, it will also make a smaller room look bigger. The kitchen is a room where you will probably spend a lot of time, and it should have color that will make the room look bright. Colors like light yellow, cream, beige, and shades of pink will give a warm and inviting appearance to your kitchen. If you have an office in your home this room should have some vibe to it, it's a place where you work so don't paint with colors that are gloomy. Make the room as bright as you can by using lilac, yellow, orange, and shades of pink. This will encourage you to work in this room and cheer you up when you don't feel in the mood to do office work.

Wall trims and doors don't have to be white either, try a different color that will accent your wall color. If your walls are a light green for example, choose a dark green for your doors and trims. If the walls are bright yellow, tone down the yellow and use it on the trims and walls. It is also a good idea to try using different textures on the walls. Dragging, sponging, frontage, and other texturing techniques can add to the rooms dimensions, while also adding to the overall enhancement of the room. Whatever room you are decorating make sure that the color suits your individual needs, and the needs of the room. Remember, that you are going to have to live with the color scheme, so choose a color that you are going to like. Be adventurous too though, and try a different color other than white, you never know, it may just grow on you.

Great ideas. I just moved into a new place and I am thinking about painting in the next 6 months or so.

Good advice. Most people don't think about how strongly the colors that surround us affect our moods and actions!

Great advice, well organized. Thanks for a truly enjoyable article on what some (not my wife, of course) could at times find mundane.
