Color Trends: 2011 Paint Colors

Jenne Joy
It's a new year and that means new colors, new trends (and not to mention, a whole new you, right?) 2010 was a tough year, so updating something basic in your home (such as a paint color) can help provide some relief (at least, to your mood.)

This guide will help you get started on the paint color trends that are expected for 2011.

Natural Shades

If a deep midnight blue doesn't strike your fancy, don't worry; this year is all about returning to the basics. Over the past couple of years, the economy has hit many of has hard and with that, comes returning to the basics. Expect to see simpler color schemes, including "farm house" color schemes that utilize natural shades of greens, browns, as well as burgundies and blues.

Of course, natural shades aren't just limited to the above. Don't be surprised to see natural shades from every corner of the world popping into view. This includes warm browns and reds, like you'd see at a spice market; or berry colors, like you'd see at a farmer's market.

2011 is all about getting back to our roots and simplifying our lives.

Midnight Blue

At the end of 2010, you saw a lot of midnight blue in Hollywood. As expected, interior design trends tend to trickle down from fashion. So, if you liked seeing midnight blue on your stars, you'll love seeing it on your walls.

Tip: because midnight blue can be a dark and harsh color, consider using it as an accent wall. Or, pair midnight blue pillows, rugs or curtains with lighter colors to keep things light when redecorating a room.

Black, White & Grey

Black, white, and every shade of grey are also becoming popular this year. Grey is ideal because it's both manly and feminine. It's also easily paired with both feminine colors (like honeysuckle pink) or 'manlier' shades (like midnight blue.)

Black and white, as always, offers us a crisp out look. Though the two separate will still occur, don't be surprised if you see more black and white color schemes emerging, especially when combined with a popping third color, such as yellow.

Pantone 2011 Color of the Year: Honeysuckle

I am absolutely in love with Pantone's color of the year, 'honeysuckle.' In recent years, I've grown to embrace the color pink (at one point, I even had a pink office.) I wish I had seen this color sooner, as I would have certainly relived the days of the bright and vibrant pink office.

Why don't they just call honeysuckle "pink?" Good article.
