Colorado AAA Motor Club: What You Need to Know

Rebecca White-Glanders
Colorado is considered by many to be one of the treacherous states in the Union to travel through. Steep roads, mountain trails and sharp curves along misty cliffs make even the most reckless driver think twice about how they behave on the road. Granted, not all of Colorado is like this; some of it is winding valleys, sandy dunes and endless, dry plains. Colorado is huge, and potentially dangerous to those who travel through her unprepared.

For over 85 years, the Colorado AAA Motor Club goes the distance, providing friendly and fast service through local providers when and where applicable. Not only do they offer discounts on key services (mostly lodging with up to 30% off the standard rate, although don't take this for granted), but they have recently provided a fuel price finder on their website (http://www.aaacolorado.com) that allows you to hunt for the cheapest gas in your zip code. When you consider how much gas can be burned when driving through the mountains of northern Colorado, this is a blessing.

As always, roadside assistance in Colorado is 24 hour, no matter where you are. Granted, this is dependant on two things- can they actually get to you, and can you actually contact them. If these two factors are a go, then AAA will cover your roadside dilemma for up to four times per membership year. However, when travelling through the more mountainous regions of the state, please remember to always pack a survival kit: flashlight, blankets, a change of clothes, dried food and bottled water, flares, matches, a pocket knife and a first aid kit. Remember that it may still take hours for you to be saved, and you want to make sure you and your loved ones stay safe.

Another nice feature of the Colorado AAA is the Colorado AutoSource Club. They do the leg work for you, hunting through Colorado dealerships to find the car you're after. While relatively new, they have already negotiated over 15,000 sales according to their site: http://www.aaacoloautosource.com/CO/INDEX.ASP. A nice side feature for folks trying to get something more fuel-efficient but without spending the time on their own, AutoSource doesn't ask for any payment upfront, just your information so they can search.

On top of all this, Colorado AAA provides travel information, repair discounts, insurance information and competitive rates, and like all AAA's, they will bring you gas if you happen to run out on the road. Again, this is dependant upon their ability to physically get to your location. If you're trapped in a February blizzard, you are still going to have to wait. Also, through their Visa card, AAA members can earn rewards through local purchases on dining and travel.

So how much does all of this cost? For one person to sign up for the basic package, the cost is $69 per year for the primary account holder and $33 for each additional member. Considering the coverage provided and what travelers in Colorado routinely have to endure, this is considered by many to be a worthwhile investment in automotive peace of mind.
